[Wishlist] Add favorite type for recursively browsable directories

From Shane Bowman on FP page:

At the moment one can only add folder links. It would be great if there was support for adding browsable directories. Another program called LaunchbarCommander allows this and it’s very efficient. I’m aware that one can add submenus, but there isn’t recursive support, which means a lot of manual labour. My folders are arranged in such a way that adding only one or two directory links will give me quick access to almost all my files.

One thing I don’t like about LC is that you can’t click folder links directly in the recursive menus, only files, which means making a right-click and left click instead of only one left-click.

  • Thank you for this suggestion Shane.

This feature can be done with QAP with the new backgorund task that can refresh a menu every x seconds. Without this possibility, refreshing the directory menu would have to be done at each menu call and (assuming there could be lots of files and subdirectories) the delay before showing the menu would be too long.

This is because submenu themselves cannot be clicked in Windows menu (either with left or right click). The solution would be to include the subfolders ad first menu item in the menu itself.

Thanks for the timely response. Is this a feature that's currently in the 6.4.2 beta, or will it be included in an upcoming beta release?

      • The background task I'm referring to is an internal process actually used to refresh the "Recent Folders" and the "Drives" menus. The same task could also refresh "Directory" favorites. But this has to be done and I could not tell when. This being said, I like the idea.

  • An update on this request. First, background refresh of menus has been put on hold. I had issues with this.

But, in the current beta version (v7.9.1.1), I implemented the "Live Folder" feature that works somehow as you described. Menus for Live Folders are built when you load QAP and refreshed when you save changes or hit reload in the Settings window.

This support recursivity. But be careful. Depending on the number of subfolders you have, digging more than 2 or 3 levels can result in performances issues.

  • This is now released for all users in QAP v8 under the name "Live Folders".
