  • Version: 6.2.1 beta (2015-11-08)
    - This is the first beta release.
    - To review new features, see the page: What’s new in Quick Access Popup compared to Folders Popup?

  • Some testers sent email feedback. For the interest of other testers, here is a summary:

    1) "When trying to bring the favorite folder at the "Open File" prompt using Quick Access Popup, it opens extra Windows Explorer window."

This is probably because you did not enable "folder navigation in dialog boxes". Go in Settings / Options / 1st tab and 1st position. I want to make this option very easy to find but still keep it as an option to make sure user read the warning message.

    2) From a Total Commander user: selecting a folder in QAP opens a new TC instance instead of a new tab. The option "Use tabs instead of opening in a new window" is selected.

I could not reproduce this. It may be to one of the TC configuration. With mine, folders open in a new tab. Maybe other users can report on their experience?

    3) I tried adding an app in the exclusions list by entering its path/filename (which should probably get a "select file" functionality) but that didn't help.

The exclusion list has to be improved. It is not based on filename but on window title. I have to document it more and make a better interface. If smoeon whant to use it, let me know and I will work on this. Also, it has to be clarified that the exclusion concerns the main QAP triggers (Middle mouse button, Windows-W) but not the favorite shortcuts.

    4) Editing a Favorite folder's Window Options and setting the "Window position" Left, Top, Width, Height coordinates resulted in an "Invalid Window Position Values" error upon saving

This is a bug. Minimal accepted values for top and left should be 0. it is 1 in v6.2.1. Will be fixed in v6.2.2.

    5) Opening the Options window after setting some folders in the Settings window make the window freeze and it is impossible to close or move it.

I never experienced it. I hope this is a not frequent. User's OS is Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bits.

Finally, you can subscribe to receive email notifications when a new comment (including new version announcements) by clicking the link in the "You can also subscribe without commenting" at the end of this page.

  • Comment from Otto moved here from the Folders Popup website:

"In folderspopup I had the middle mouse button set to open the program. Middle mouse button activated the folderspopup only if the mouse pointed to the desktop or file browser surface. This was OK. Now quick access popup is opened by mouse moddle button also if the mouse pointer is on internet browser. This is should not happen. I use middle mousse button to open links in new TAB and quick access popup makes it impossible."

    • Hi Otto.

Thank you for this feedback. QAP (Quick Access Popup) implements a new approach for triggers following discussion with FP users. In QAP, the MMB (middle-mouse button) is always active except if the target window is on the exclusion list (more on this below). If the target window supports folder navigation (Explorer, dialog box), the window is changed to the target folder. If not, the folder is open in a new Explorer window. This way, user have only one trigger to remember.

Users who want to preserve the MMB in certain applications can add these apps in the Exclusion list (Settings / Options, 4th tab). In v6.2.1, you have to enter part of the target window "class name". To exclude Chrome, simply enter "Chrome" in the top exclusion list. You can enter multiple exclusions, one per line. Save and try again. The MMB will work in Chrome as if QAP was not loaded.

Because finding window's class name is not easy, in v6.2.2 (to be released in the next days), the exclusion list will also support excerpt of the window title (what appear in window top bar). As result, if you add "Microsoft Word" in the exclusion list, Word will be excluded.

I understand this is shift for FP users but I could really like if you could give this new approach a try. Would you?

PS: I rewrote the FAQ page on exclusion list.

  • Version: 6.2.2 beta (2015-11-12)
    - fix bug minimal value for top/left window position can be 0, not 1
    - improve exclusion lists management in Options, add help text and link, support exclusion based on window title or class (see this page for help)
    - change dev icon to red (beta is green, prod will be white)

    • About the exclusion list, I forgot to mention that the option name in the ini file changed. If you had exclusions list in the previous version, you have to re-enter your exclusions in v6.2.2.

Hi, thank you for this great application. I've tried Folder Menu so far ( http://foldermenu.sourceforge.net/ ) which I like very much too. I think it uses the same technical basis like Quick Access Popup and the source code is also available.
One feature of Folder Menu would be nice to have in Quick Access Popup / Folders Popup as well: Instead of opening the explorer when you choose a folder in the favorites list Folder Menu also offers a setting to show the directory content within Folder Menu by extending the directory tree. The only thing Folder Menu lacks is a button or hotkey which triggers a refresh of the folders content.

    • Sorry for the delay approving your comment. Because of spam, comments with URL require approval.

I've been in contact with Rexx, the developer of Folder Menu. Unfortunately, he stopped developing his tools a few years ago but he is still available for sharing ideas. And I already used some of his work in FP (for column breaks, for example).

About your suggestion, it seems to be related to this feature request from Sebastien here:
      http://www.quickaccesspopup.com/dynamic-submenu-listing-subfolders-in-the-current-folder/

I added your "+1" with this request. And we can continue the discussion there. Thanks for your input.

Also thanks a lot for this reply, Jean. You are right, the feature request of Sebastien already covers what I was asking for.

For deploying purposes it would be very important to be able to not be forced to use absolute paths only. E.g. with environmental variables through the Windows "Run" command or the start.exe command I can start Word by just using winword.exe or start.exe winword . Unfortunately this is not possible in Quick Access Popup at the moment and I haven't found any other workaround.

Also Quick Access Popup itself should work with relative paths to it's own program folder.

    Thank you!

    0
    • Hum... Good call. Nobody mentioned this before during QAP or FP developement. But I agree with you. This will require some adjustments in the way I handle relative paths but this will be done shortly.

    Hello Jean,

your recent update greatly fulfilled all my desires so far. Your tool has improved my daily workflow a lot. Thank you!

There are two potential bugs that I've seen in the meanwhile. Both of them are not critical though:

    - The "current folders" feature opens a new explorer window instead of showing the already opened explorer window with the folder selected.

    - When I try to link a document on a read only network drive I get an error message preventing me to create the link. I can do it through the settings file in spite of this. So there's no practical constraint for me.

    Best,
    Helge

    • Hi Helge,

#1: I could not reproduce this issue. How did you call the popup menu? Did you Middle-click in an Explorer window? If you called the menu using the tray icon, then the folder is always open in a new Explorer.

#2: Good catch! I used an option of the "Select File" dialog box that shows "Save" button instead of "Open". But it seems that with this option Windows checks if the target drive is writable. I removed this option. This will be in fixed v6.2.4.

Thanks for your opening comment and for the time you put in testing and sending bug reports!

      Jean

PS: I moved your comment from the "wishlist page" to this "beta test page". I orefer to keep bug reports in this page. Thanks.

    Hi Jean,

thank you for comments. I wasn't precise enough about issue #1. The problem is that once I choose one of the currently opened folders in the "current folders" list QAP opens a second instance of the same folder (a second explorer window with the same folder). Instead I would expect QAP to just bring to the front the explorer window which is already open.

I hope this description is better.

    Thanks,
    Helge

    • Oh, I see. This is designed like this. This deature allow you to re-open one of the current folders in the current Explorer, the current dialog box (where it is the moste useful) or a new Explorer, depending on where you middle-mouse-clicked.

Maybe the menu could be renamed "Reopen current folder" but I'm not sure if it is better?

On the other hand, I could be added to your wish http://www.quickaccesspopup.com/include-in-menu-a-list-of-all-open-applications-as-an-alternative-to-alttab/ to also switch to an existing folder.

      • Helge

Thank you, Jean. I left another comment below. Sorry, I wanted to post it into the other feature request instead. I will do it there again.

Regarding the reopening of a new instance of the same folder I can only speak for my usage scenario where I would mostly only need to bring the already opened explorer window back to the front. At least I think the user should have the choice between both options.

        0
        • The actual "Current Folders" QAP feature is especially thought for switching the folder in a dialog box to one folder already open in another Explorer window. It would be another feature that would switch to an existing Explorer window. I added your suggestion to the wishlist as mentioned following your next comment, below. Thanks.

As a follow-up to http://www.quickaccesspopup.com/welcome-to-quick-access-popup-beta-test/#comment-859 I'd like to suggest an additional QAP special feature which shows the currently opened windows explorer folders like the "current folders" feature already available, but with the difference that choosing a currently opened folder in QAP doesn't open the same folder in a new explorer window / instance. Instead I would find great if the already opened explorer window with the folder chosen in QAP would just come to the front.

    • Following this suggestion, to make menu labels more clear, I changed the "Current Folders" label to "Reuse an Open Folder" in v6.2.4 (below). I'm not sure if "Reuse" is the the best verb to say "open again in a new Explorer or in a file dialog box" ? ...

In a future release, "Switch to an Open Folder" could be use for a feature that would bring one of the current Explorer window to the front.

I'm always open to other suggestions. English being my second language, I'm not sure of my choices... This is also why beta release are there 🙂

    Jello Jean.
I would like an option to shorten the time for displaying the info messages after changes in the config.
Its much to long for me in Windows 10.

    • Hi Horst,

The same Windows internal command used to show notifications in earlier version has some issues in Win 10. I fixed one causing successive messages to display in the reverse order of their creation (completely illogical!). I also noticed an overly/transparency issue (no know solution to date). And there is the duration issue. In the actual QAP code, the command is sent with the default duration value. In past version this was OK.

What is the current (average) duration of the message "Your menu has been updated" in your environment? And what would be the optimal duration in your opinion? I'll try to fix it in next beta release.

      Thanks,

      Jean

      0
      • Following an email exchange with Horst, I tried to set the message duration to 3 seconds but Windows 10 still display it about 6 seconds. I'll take a note about the possibility to write additional code to launch a timer job that would close the notification after a given number of seconds, but with a low priority. Thanks Horst.

  • The setup file http://www.quickaccesspopup.com/download/quickaccesspopup-setup-beta.exe was put in quarantine by error by my website hosting malware scanner (false malware detection)., It is now back in place and whitelisted. It should stay there for good now 🙂 Thanks to user reporting the issue.

  • It seems like each time you restart your computer, it resets the "Change folders in dialog box with main QAP hotkeys" setting. Or, maybe each time you access the Options dialog, it resets it back to off.

I also find the "Recent Folders" (Shift+Ctrl+R) quite useful. I'd love to be able to include it in the Power Features menu as well.

    • Hi Craig,

Thanks for reporting this issue and for your suggestion. I'll look at it tonight or during the week-end.

I can't confirm this behaviour of "Change folders in dialog box with main QAP hotkeys".
I've set it to on and it stays so even after a PC reboot or changing other settings.

    • Craig said:
      > I also find the “Recent Folders” (Shift+Ctrl+R) quite useful. I’d love to be able to include it in the Power Features menu as well.

Up to now, the Power Menu (renamed "Alternative" menu in v6.2.4 released tonight) is used only for features requesting a "second-step" selection in the QAP menu. For example, after you selected "Edit favorite" in Alternative menu, you are invited to select which favorite to edit in the QAP menu. The Recent Folders does follow this logic. This is why I prefer to keep it in the "My QAP Essential" (or in the main or any other submenu if you prefer to move it). Thanks again for your input, Craig.

      0
    • Craig,

The Recent Folders menu is now integrated with the "My QAP Essentials" menu (not a separate menu anymore). If this is what you meant, this is available in v6.4.1.

  • I've got a feeling that it is an read-write issue in the folder that I placed QAP. I created this folder, and copied the contents of the .ZIP file to the foler:

    C:\Program Files\QuickAccessPopup

I don't think that QAP has written to the .INI file since the date is the original date. So it must keep keeping the settings in memory and loses it when it on reboot when it re-reads the .INI file.

  • It's been a long time since the last beta release. I've been working on the French version and it came with some additional work to make language management easier in the future. For not French-speaking users, there are however some new features, including automatic detection on Windows folder icons when you create a favorite folder, and, as an interesting bonus, the possibility to use the "change favorite folder icon" dialog box to also change the Windows folder icon very easily.

    Version: 6.2.4 beta (2015-12-07)

    New features
    - get current Windows folder icon (from desktop.ini file) and assign it as default for new folder favorites
    - add link to the "Menu options" tab of the "Add favorite" dialog box to set Windows folder icon to the icon currently selected for the favorite, and a link to remove Windows folder icon
    - French language translation and adjustments to original English language while translating to French

    Minor modification and bug fixes
    - when adding a favorite folder or document from a network drive with HTTP address (WebDAV) transform the location to network path (UNC) format for compatibility with Windows Explorer
    - fix bug unable to create folder, document or application favorite on read-only support
    - limit notification duration to 3 seconds for the message menu has been updated
    - renamed "Power" menu/hotkey/features to "Alternative" menu/hotkey/features
    - renamed "Current Folders" QAP feature menu "Reuse an Open Folder"

  • No new feature for beta testers. The changes in this version are mostly for translators.

    Version: 6.2.5 beta (2015-12-10)
    - language files prepared for translators
    - implement language debugging tool for translators

    Minor modification and bug fixes
    - change Settings header to include links to website help pages

I like your tool a lot. It is a better replacement for FileBox Extender which is not developed anymore.

Everything works fine, but I think I found a bug. Since I did not find an official way to post beta test bugs, I comment here. I hope you see this:

If I use the "Open folder in explorer" feature with network folders (e.g. an explorer window that shows "\\SERVER\dir1\dir2") to open or navigate to the network path, I get an error message that says that the favorite does not exist or is not available.

The path is displayed (in the message and in the menu list) as "file:\\SERVER\dir1\dir2". The network path is accessisible as I can navigate to it manually without problems.

Thanks a lot for the nice tool.

    Regards,
    Headhunter

        Hi Horst,

thanks for the info, but i was talking about the "Open folder in explorer” feature, not the standard favorites. These are the pathes, QAP collects from all open explorers. A network path from that list leads to the error message I described.

        Regards,
        Sven

    • This has been fixed in v6.3.1. Thanks again, Sven, for catching and reporting it 🙂

      1+
    • PS: The feature where you found this bug has been renamed to "Reuse an open folder". This is to distinguish it from a future feature that would be named "Switch to an open folder". With the verb "Switch", the current Explorer window containing the folder will be "activated" (taken to the front). With "Resuse", the current Explorer/File dialog box is "changed" to the folder or a new Explorer is "open" with this folder (depending on where you called the menu).

If you have comments on this, it is welcome before I get to official release. Thanks.

        I installed v6.3.1. Works like a charm now! 🙂

Thanks again for fixing this so quickly!

About the naming of the menu entries: I think the texts you chose are comprehensible and the user will be able to distinguish the different meanings.

        Regards,
        Sven

  • This is a bug-fixes and small improvements release. I changed to 6.3+ to mark the step: QAP is now getting closer to official release as it is now not only ready for localization but being currently translated!

    Version: 6.3.1 beta (2015-12-14)

    Improvements
    - display numeric shortcuts and hotkey reminders in Alternative menu
    - does not show icon options in add/edit favorite if running on server OS (actually, icons are supported only on workstations)
    - reading/writing Windows folder icon in desktop.ini supporting IconResource (Vista+) instead of IconFile,IconIndex format (deprecated after XP), and set folder to read-only instead of system to show the custom icon in desktop.ini

    Bug fixes
    - fix bug when reusing an open folder on a network drive
    - fix bug set Windows folder icon now detect if location is empty
    - fix bug when cancelling an hotkey assignment, the previously selected hotkey was assigned
    - fix bug Add Favorite QAP must show Settings window before Add favorite dialog box to set default destination menu and position

    1+
  • This is an important release for two reasons: the addition of three new languages (thanks to kiketrucker, Igor Ruckert and Åke Engelbrektson !) and two popular requests from the wishlist!

Note to beta testers upgrading from an earlier version: You will have to add manually a menu item in the "My QAP Essentials" menu (this item will be inserted by default for new users). Please, after you upgrade to v6.3.2, execute the following steps:
    1) Open the Settings window and go to the My QAP Essentials submenu.
    2) In this menu, add a favorite of type QAP Features and select Switch to an Open Folder or Application.
    3) Save your changes to the Settings.

    Version: 6.3.2 beta (2015-12-21)

    Improvements
    - Add QAP feature Switch to an Open Folder or Application (existing folders from Windows Explorer supported and Directory Opus are supported - Total Commander users, please read this post)
    - Add an option in Add/Edit Favorite of type Application to flag if we activate an existing instance of this application instead of launching a new one.
    - Addition of Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese and Swedish translations.

    Adjustments
    - Stop showing hidden apps in the running apps dropdown list in Add/Edit Favorite for Application type.
    - Reorder items in default main menu with My QAP Essentials before My Special Folders and reorder items inside My QAP Essentials menu.

    Bug fix
    - fix password label alignment in Add/Edit Favorite dialog box for FTP type.

  • Hello everyone, I wanted to communicate a failure that has occurred to me since several beta versions ago. It is that when you open the setup menu and make any changes goes well until there comes a time when the configuration window is frozen on screen inaccessible to any option, just be close from the taskbar, and so that everything works fine again have to close the program and reopen it.
This failure occurs to me in both Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit, and Windows 8.1 Pro 32bit.......

    0
    • Thank you Kiketrucker for reporting this (and thank you again for the Spanish translation!). I remember you mention this in an email in November. It was v6.2.1 at that time. As I said at that time, I never encountered this issue myself. Did other beta testers did?

If whenever you notice an action that you did in the Settings window just before it freeze, please tell me. It would help finding the cause of this issue.

Avoiding multiple instances of the same running application works great, mostly. Thanks for implementing this feature.

Some apps however - residing in the systray - won't come up when I call their running instance from QAP. Some of them allow to assign a hotkey to bring them into view, let's assume F12 - which makes me wonder if it were possible to call a script instead, say an ahk-file, that does something like this:

    if (isProcessRunning("sChecklist.exe")) {sendkeys "^{F12}";}
    else
    {run "..\Checklist\sChecklist.exe";}

I wouldn't know how to script it for AHK, but I remember s.o. telling me it's supposedly possible in AutoHotKey.

    Any ideas?

Another issue: QAP changed the tray icon of one of my applications, it now bears the QAP icon in the tray, always, even when QAP is not running

    0
    • Hi Yabber,

The Windows command I use to retrieve the running programs does not include those in the systray. These apps windows are not "visible" until they are activated by using the app's tray icon menu or hitting a hotkey, as you mentioned. Your suggestion is for a very specific situation. I'm not ready to work on this now. On the other hand, I'm in the early thinking of incorporating kind of "plug -in" AHK code in favorite. This could be an eventual solution. Thanks again for your input, Yabber.

      > QAP changed the tray icon of one of my applications

QAP does nothing that could lead to this kind of issue. Could this be a temporary glitch in your Windows systray management software? Tell me if this persist after reboot and if it can be reproduced.

      0
      • YabberYeti

        Thank you Jean,
you are right, the tray icon got messed up because of other problems, has nothing to do with QAP.

A pity that tray-resident programs cannot be retrieved, it's mainly those tray-programs I am concerned with. They really should have an option themselves to stick to "one instance only", but for those who don't it were nice to have some kind of solution - and if only it consists of a message "Already running in tray" still better than starting ever new instances.

If only I knew how to do it in AHK, I could simply call such an ahk-exe from QAP, then let the ahk-exe take care of it. Maybe I will consult their forum at a later time. For now thank you very much for your efforts.

    Hello Jean,
a suggestion for the main settings form.
For me the icons on the right side (Add, Edit, Remove, Hotkeys) and their descriptions are misaligned.
The text labels are below the Icons but much to close to the next Icon below of it.
If the text would be above the Icons it would be much easier to see what text belongs to what Icon.

    0
    • Thank you for this suggestion, Horst. First, I will try to increase the distance between buttons. We could get the same confusion if the labels are above but still to close to the other button.

      0
      • Jim S

With QAP v6.5.3 beta, it appears that you moved the text closer to the Options, Add, Edit, Remove, Copy, and Hotkeys buttons. That's a big improvement. For visual consistency you might want to do the same for Support, About, and Help,

        0
  • Horst Epp

    Hello Jean,
the actual beta version takes much longer to start a favorite from the tray icon as before.
I've a high end system with no activity at all and it takes about 6 seconds to get an entry started.
All other programs are starting fast.

  • New-Year-2016Before I go into the details for this important release, I would like to take a minute to thank you, beta testers, for your involvement in the QAP project. You are 25-30 regular users following closely each new release and providing valuable feedback, bug reports and suggestions. You play a huge role in this development project, and, while I thank you for your help in the last year, I want to wish you and yours a Happy New Year!

There is a lot of information for you about this new release. Only one new feature but a lot of behind the scene improvement making the application even more efficient. Please, take a minute to see what's new in v6.4.1 and, for current beta users upgrading to this new release, pay attention to the "Update instructions" just before the download links.

    Version: 6.4.1 beta (2015-12-29)

    New features
    - New QAP feature "Drives" showing a menu with a list drives on your system with label, free space, capacity and icon showing the drive type.
    - Add the "Drives" QAP feature to "My QAP Essentials" menu (this is only for new users - old users see the update instructions below).

    CHANGED IN v6.5.1
Because the "Drives" menu can take a long time to refresh (especially when a CD/DVD drive is inserted), I could not refresh this menu just when you open the QAP main menu (this would cause an unacceptable delay before showing the menu). Instead, to avoid this delay, I implemented a background task to refresh this menu every x seconds (10 seconds by default). This background task should be imperceptible as it takes very little CPU resource. I took this opportunity to also refresh the Recent folders menu in this background task, allowing me to make this menu part of the main menu (no more independent menu).

    Improvements to dynamic menu refresh
    - Refactor build and refresh code for dynamic menus: "Clipboard", "Drives", "Recent Folders", "Switch" and "Reopen a Folder" (aka "Current Folders" and "Reuse an Open Folder").
    - Refresh "Drives" and "Recent Folders" in a background task and when the menu is called by its shortcut.
    - Add the variable "DynamicMenusRefreshRate=10000" in QuickAccessPopup.ini file to set the refresh background task rate in milliseconds (by default 10 seconds).
    - Add diagnostic code to log refresh times in the diag ini file (set "DiagMode=1" in quickaccesspopup.ini to enable diagnostic mode).
    - Refresh "Clipboard", "Reopen a Folder" and "Switch" menus at each call to the main popup menu (not in the background task) and when a submenu open using its shortcut contains one of these dynamic menus.
    - Abort "Clipboard" menu refresh if clipboard is too big (> 50 K).
    - Make the "Recent Folders" submenu integrated to the main menu (not a separate menu anymore).

    Other changes
    - In default popup menu (as created for new users), move "Add this folder" QAP feature to main menu, below "Settings".
    - Rename the "Reuse an Open Folder" QAP feature to "Reopen a Folder".
    - Rename the "Switch to an Open Folder or Application" QAP feature to, simply, "Switch".
    - Add the default hotkey Shift-Ctrl-W to "Switch" QAP feature (for new user).
    - Increase vertical distance between "Add" / "Edit" / "Remove" / "Copy" buttons in "Settings" for more clarity.
    - Create the Startup shortcut at first execution (previously, users had to set the startup option themselves).
    - Removed debugging code in refresh of the "Switch" menu

    SOLVED in v6.5.1
    Known issue

Talking about the QAP features, there is an issue about them that gave me a good headache to finally discover that the issue is not caused by QAP but is a but between AHK (my development tool) and Windows. This bug has been confirmed by AHK main developer and should be fixed in the next update. In the mean time (for a short time, I hope), we have to live with it. It is not a major issue because it affect only some menus in very specific conditions and it is active only one time in two. This issue affects the submenu where there are at least two submmenus, one of them being a dynamic menu (those with content needing to be refreshed: "Switch", "Reopen a Folder", "Recent Folders", "Clipboard" and "Drives"). When the bug is active (one time in two), one of the submenus is broken: its icon is missing and the submenu cannot be open. When you see this, simply reopen the menu and the missing menu should be back.

    Update instructions

Note to beta testers upgrading from an earlier version: You will have to add manually a menu item in the “My QAP Essentials” menu (this item will be inserted by default for new users). Please, after you upgrade to v6.4.1, execute the following steps:
    1) Open the Settings window and go to the "My QAP Essentials" submenu.
    2) In this menu, add a favorite of type QAP Features and select "Drives".
    3) Save your changes to the Settings.

But before saving, you can also do these two changes. First, add the hotkey Shift-Ctrl-W to "Switch" QAP feature (this will be by default for new user). Also, in v6.4.1, I changed the default position of menu items in the "My QAP Essentials" submenu. If you want your menu to be as the default menu for new users, you can do these changes before saving. The new order QAP menu order is: "Switch", "Reopen a Folder", "Recent Folders", "Clipboard" and "Drives". The "Add this Folder" menu item has been moved to the main menu, under the "Settings" menu.

    Hi,

so far no problems with v6.4.1 beta. One general thing though: The default hotkey for opening the menu is the middle mouse button. This interferes with some default functionalities of Windows, most nostably when using the middle mouse button on an open application icon in the taskbar (this opens a new instance of that application - a function I use quite often with windows explorer). Perhaps another default hotkey or some kind of exclusion would be worth considering.

I changed my hotkey to "Control + Middle Mouse Boutton" and everything is fine. So, no game breaker. 🙂

Having said that, I want to say that your utility is one of the most useful I ever used when fiddling with a lot of files. Keep up the good work! 🙂

    Regards,
    Sven

    • Hi Headhunter,

I understand your point. On the other hand, many users never use this button because there are always other ways to accomplish what the MMB does in these apps. And it is so easy to popup the QAP menu with only one finger. But if you are used to MMB in other apps, there are two options:

      1) As you did, changing the hotkey is a good option if you use the MMB in many apps.
      2) But, if it is in only a few apps, you could also exclude these apps in the "Exclusions list" in Options. For example, to exclude Chrome, enter the following line in the list:

      Chrome

Or, if you want to be more specific, enter part of the Chrome class name:

      Chrome_WidgetWin_1

See this FAQ post for more info:
      http://www.quickaccesspopup.com/can-i-block-the-qap-menu-hotkeys-if-they-interfere-with-one-of-my-other-apps/

And thanks for your comments and suggestion.

  • This is a bug fixes release I was supposed to work on a video demo - but preparing this demo showed some more bugs... Only one serious issue (first in the list), other are small bugs or adjustments with less impact.

    Version: 6.4.2 beta (2015-12-31)
    - fix bug when moving submenus or groups from one submenu to another as part of a multiple move (select multiple items in Settings and click Move), location was not updated properly, shortcuts were broken, group stop working
    - fix bug when opening Alternative menu item having a shortcut reminder
    - add numeric shortcuts to alternative menu
    - refresh alternative menu after options saved
    - fix bug hotkey to menu showing error if menu empty
    - fix bug when trying to add favorite without selecting a favorite type
    - remove support for FTP sites in Reopen menu (still supported in Switch menu)

And now, it's true: Happy New Year!

I love Quick Access Popup!!! Thank you very much for sharing your awesome tool and its predecessor FoldersPopup.

This is a bug report, not a feature request. I'm testing QAP v6.4.2 beta. When initially creating a QAP Application item, the program's icon is properly set and displayed. However, if any QAP parameter for that item is later changed, the program icon is not displayed properly; a '?' is displayed.

    • Hi Jim,

I could not reproduce this bug. We need to find what is the specific situation creating this issue. I'll send you by email info to run QAP in diagnostic mode. Hope this will help.

      Thanks for reporting this.

        >I’ll send you by email info to run QAP in diagnostic mode.

I'd be glad to run QAP in diagnostic mode. In the meantime, maybe this will help...

Contents of the INI file after Application item is first added:
        Favorite165=Application|notepad++|C:\Program Files (x86)\Notepad++\notepad++.exe||||0,,,,,,|0|||||

Contents of the INI file after the Application item is modified (I changed the 'short name for menu' from "notepad++" to "Notepad++"):
        Favorite165=Application|Notepad++|C:\Program Files (x86)\Notepad++\notepad++.exe|C:\windows\System32\shell32.dll,176|||0,,,,,,|0|||||

        >I could not reproduce this bug.

Today I decided to try to reproduce the bug using the default INI rather than mine (which is somewhat complicated and was originally created by FoldersPopup). I was able to reproduce the bug with these simple steps:

        1. Rename my INI.
        2. Start QAP.
        3. Press #w to observe QAP main menu. Notepad icon appears as expected.
        4. Press to dismiss QAP menu.
        5. Press +^s to open QAP settings.
        6. Select the Notepad item and click Edit.
        7. Click OK (without making any changes).
        8. Click Save to close QA settings.
        9. Press #w to observe QAP main menu. Notepad icon appears as '?' (C:\windows\System32\shell32.dll,176)

As I was investigating this issue I opened the QAP INI and noticed something else that's not really a problem, but is a minor issue that you might want to consider changing (if for no other reason to simplify troubleshooting when comparing INI files). As you know when you start QAP and no INI is present, QAP creates one. This default INI has the [Favorites] section in the middle portion of the file. If subsequently a user opens the QAP settings, clicks 'Edit' for any menu item, does NOT make a change, clicks OK, and then clicks Save to close the Settings, QAP moves the [Favorites] section to the end of the INI.

On a related note, I noticed that the default INI does not include the following:

        ChangeFolderInDialog=0
        Check4Update=1
        RememberSettingsPosition=1
        AlternativeHotkeyMouse=+MButton
        AlternativeHotkeyKeyboard=+#W
        ExclusionMouseList=

        0
        • > Today I decided to try to reproduce the bug using the default INI

Good idea. I did the same and was able to reproduce the bog. It is fixed. Good catch again 🙂

          > QAP moves the [Favorites] section to the end of the INI

This is not under QAP's control. This is done by Windows (QAP is only sending a command to Windows). But the order in the default INI file is. I can change it.

          > I noticed that the default INI does not include the following (...)

These values are written in the ini file only if the suer choose a value other than the default value in the Options. Normally, I prefer if "regular" users change settings in the Options dialog box, not directly in the ini file.

Thanks for helping me catching this bug. I'll follow up on your other messages a little later.

          • Jim S

            >These values are written in the ini file only if the suer choose a value other than the default value in the Options.

I've found that they are added to the default INI even if the settings are not modified. That is:

            1. Start QAP.
            2. Press +^s to open QAP settings.
            3. Click the Options button.
            4. Click Save (without making any changes).
            5. Click Close to close QA settings.
            6. Exit QAP.

As Step 4 is executed I see the Taskbar popup message ("The menu has been updated.") even though I didn't make a change.

This obviously isn't a end-user problem, but since ChangeFolderInDialog, etc., behave differently compared to other settings in the INI, I thought that you might want to know.

            0
            • Yes. You are right. The values missing in the default ini file are added when Options are saved. In fact, I prefer to leave in the ini file created at first launch only values that are required until user change Options. So, I reduced the size of the defaul tini file.

              > I see the Taskbar popup message (“The menu has been updated.”) even though I didn’t make a change.

Yes. I would have to track if there are changes impacting the menu and refresh only if required. Let's put it on the lower priority issues 🙂

Thanks again for all this . The next beta release will be dedicated to you 🙂

I'm testing QAP v6.4.2 beta and am loving it!

As you probably know, with the QAP main pop-up menu the first item can be launched using the 0 key (accelerator ). For submenus I've noticed that the first item is launched using the 1 key. Is there a reason for the difference?

It would be nice accelerators could be user-defined in one of two ways: 1) separate QAP parameter (preferred), or 2) by using an & in the label (e.g., &Notepad++). [Note that when & is used now, QAP renders the expected underscore under the subsequent letter, but QAP ignores the accelerator.]

I recognize that this request isn't trivial and could cause some confusion. Maybe it could be simplified by this rule: If the user specifies a mnemonic accelerator for any item, then QAP would not add any default accelerators for that menu (or submenu).

My end goal is to create a QAP submenu for Applications (which is launched using Alt-Space) that includes a list of commonly used programs that could be launched with logical mnemonic accelerators (e.g., launch Notepad++ by pressing Alt+space immediately followed by the n key). This would be an extremely fast and efficient method to launch common programs. Moreover the Application submenu could be modified (items inserted) without affecting the required keystrokes for programs previously defined on the submenu.

I appreciate the QAP feature that allows direct launching of any item using a defined Shortcut (as I mentioned above that I've done using Alt-space to launch an Application submenu), but in my opinion this feature should be used somewhat sparingly to avoid conflicts with shortcuts that are defined within individual programs. If QAP provided for mnemonic accelerators, then we'd have the best of both worlds. 🙂

    Thanks for considering this suggestion!!!

    • Hi again Jim,

      > For submenus I’ve noticed that the first item is launched using the 1 key. Is there a reason for the difference?

It should always start at 0. The reason is a small bug that will be fixed in the next beta release. Good catch 🙂

      > 2) by using an & in the label (e.g., &Notepad++)

This should work as you expect in the current release. Ampersand commands in menu names work well for me. This is handled by Windows, not QAP (meaning that QAP is using standard Windows commands to build and display menus). I'll check in your diag file to see if I can find a reason why it does not work on your system.

I like your Application menu idea. And I agree with you that QAP shortcuts should be used with parsimony.

Thanks for you good words about QAP and welcome in the beta testers group!

      Jean

        >This should work as you expect in the current release.

Okay I embarrassed to say that until today I didn't notice the setting: Display Numeric Menu Shortcuts

That option has been set for me. (Maybe I set it months ago when using FoldersPopup.)

So after deselecting that option I can achieve my end goal by setting the 'Short name for menu' appropriately. For example: &n Notepad++

With that said, the above request should no longer be considered for the wishlist. Sorry about the confusion this may have caused.

Today I found a minor bug with QAP v6.4.2 beta. Within Settings > Options > Alternative Menu Hotkeys, if a hotkey is defined for an Alternate Menus item and then changed, the change is immediately recognized. However, if the change is to 'None', the change is not recognized until one exits QAP and then restarts QAP. (If the Settings are reopened and other changes are made before one exits QAP, the change to 'None' can be lost.)

  • This is a bug fix release. Thanks to Jim S for digging out these deep but real bugs. And welcome in the beta testers group.

    Version: 6.4.3 beta (2016-01-06)
    - fix bug: numeric shortcuts in submenu now always begin at 0
    - fix bug: Application and Document favorites icons now set properly when saving after edit the favorite
    - fix bug: when setting alternative menu item hotkey to none, hotkey is now disabled immediately, without requiring to restart QAP
    - removed unnecessary values in default ini file
    - seven additional browsers supported by QAP, added to the QAPconnect.ini list: ExplorerXP (v1.07), Far Manager (v3.0.4040), IrfanView (v4.38), SpeedCommander (v15.40.7700), Tablacus Explorer (v14.12.30), WinNC (v6.5) and XnView (v2.25). Thanks to Roland Toth (tpr) for his help maintaining these settings - https://github.com/rolandtoth.

Since several beta versions I have sometimes the effect that a left click on the QAP icon in the tray
results in some strange reaction which shuts down QAP at the end.
I must then clean the _temp sub-dir before starting it again, if I dont do this the problem starts again.

    • Hi Horst,

I have seen this myself. Trying to find what was the cause, I think I found that the problem is in the code that refreshes the Clipboard menu content. The next time it happens, open the Settings windows (using the right -click on the Tray icon or Shift-Ctrl-S) and remove the Clipboard menu from the "My QAP Essentials" menu (or elsewhere if you inserted it in another menu). Tell me if this stops the issue from occurring.

I now have to find what's wrong in this code. It is probably since I rework the code refreshing the five dynamic menus in the "My QAP Essentials" menu (v6.4.1).

Thanks for reporting the Windows log event info. More to come on this.

I've also observed this behavior three or four times. When QAP crashes, my Win7 computer become extremely sluggish to the point where the pointer movement significantly lag my mouse movement. The last time it occurred I attempted to logoff and then log back in, but the symptoms returned as soon as I restarted QAP and clicked on the icon in the System Tray. So I restarted my computer and then relaunched QAP.

Specifically where is the _temp sub-dir?

      Thanks.

      0
      • Sorry for that. I'll work on this Tomorrow.

The /_temp folder is created under the QAP working directory and erased when QAP terminates normally. If it crashes, the folder stays there but is erased the next time you use QAP.

  • This release was removed. Please see next comment.

    Version: 6.4.4 beta (2016-01-10)
    - little changes in the code refreshing the Clipboard menu, trying to find the source of the issue sometimes causing a crash of QAP during dynamic menus refresh
    - fix bug with numeric shortcuts in Clipboard menu when there are more than 36 items in the menu

  • I'm having issues with background tasks that I introduced in v6.4.1. This makes QAP unstable. I prefer to revert the beta test to v6.3.1 until I fix this in alpha tests. Testers who would like to help me in alpha testing, please, send me an email at ahk@jeanlalonde.ca.

I reviewed the code carefully. I compared it with a version before recent changes in the code refreshing the dynamic menus (v6.4.1) and I can't find what's wrong with it. Maybe it is caused by an internal command controlling thread priorities (Critical command for those familiar with AHK). I removed this code in v6.4.4 but it did not help. This is why I prefer to revert to 6.3.1.

    SOLVED in v6.5.1!
    Known issue

There is a known issue between AHK (my development tool) and Windows. This bug has been confirmed by AHK main developer and should be fixed in the next update. In the mean time (for a short time, I hope), we have to live with it. It is not a major issue because it affect only some menus in very specific conditions and it is active only one time in two. This issue affects the submenu where there are at least two submenus, one of them being a dynamic menu (those with content needing to be refreshed: “Switch”, “Reopen a Folder”, “Recent Folders”, “Clipboard” and “Drives”). When the bug is active (one time in two), one or some of the submenus are broken: icon are missing and the submenus cannot be open. When you see this, simply reopen the menu and the missing menu(s) should be back.

  • Hi beta testers,

Just a quick update. In the last days, I worked on a new version with the priority to bring back a stable version that will include the newest features introduced in v6.4 (QAP features "Switch" and "Drives"). I should release in a day or two.

I also took some time to upgrade my dev tools to the latest version (AHK executable and compiler). Good news! This new version solves the submenu issue described in the "Known issue" paragraph in the previous comment.

Until the next version is released, I recommend to stay to v6.3.1. QAP should be back on track in a few days 🙂

    1+
  • OK. Version 6.5.1 looks good! I removed the background task that refreshes the 2 dynamic submenus ("My QAP Essential / Recent Folders" and "My QAP Essential / Drives") and I made these two submenus to be refreshed and displayed "on demand". As the "Recent Folders" submenu was before 6.4.1, these menus will be displayed in a separate menu (not as part of the main menu).

With the help of some alpha testers, I will work to make reliable background tasks or try another approach I'm thinking of My goal is to make these submenus part of the main menu and refreshed to be as current as possible.

For now, you can upgrade safely to v6.5.1. For those who are new to this beta test and who installed v6.3.1 recently, you can see what has been added or changed between 6.3.1 and 6.5.1 here: v6.3.2, v6.4.1, v6.4.2 and v6.4.3.

    Version: 6.5.1 beta (2016-01-18)
    - fix the broken submenu issue making some dynamisc submenus to be sometime inactive (this an AHK bug solved with version 1.1.23.00)
    - disabled background task refreshing dynamic menus "Recent folders" and "Drives"
    - reverted "Recent folders" menu to external menu (not integrated) refreshed on demand (until the refresh background task is fixed)
    - changed the "Drives" menu to external menu (not integrated) refreshed on demand (until the refresh background task is fixed)
    - update to Sweeden and Spanish language

    1+
  • Also, I just published a video about QAP: Quick Access Popup Features Overview.

    1+
  • Before returning to tests and research about background refresh, I'm testing in this version a simpler approach. "Recent Folders" and "Drives" submenus are back integrated into the main menu. If, in some situation (like when you just inserted a CD in your CD drive), the refresh time gets longer between the middle mouse button mouse click and the menu display, the mouse cursor changed to the "wait" image will inform the user that the app is not frozen, that he/she just have to wait a bit. Most of the time, the refresh duration is under 2/10 sec (may differ on slower machine) and the mouse cursor change should be hardly visible. Please, tell me if this works well for you.

    Version: 6.5.2 and 6.5.3 beta (2016-01-24)
    - addition of German translation (thanks to Edgar “Fast Edi” Hoffmann)
    - change the mouse cursor to the "wait" image during "Recent Folders" and "Drives" submenus refresh
    - make "Recent Folders" and "Drives" submenus back integrated to the main menu (not a separate menu anymore)
    - removed tooltip messages when refreshing Recent Folders and Drives menus

Usng QAP 6.5.3, it works as you described on my system. I did note, however, that for a CD that was 600 MB, QAP reports (0 GB free/0 GB).

      0
      • I have the same result for read-only CD. I dont have a writable CD to test right now. But I'm sure QAP displays the info received from Window. Maybe I should not display the capacity if it is zero.

  • Jim S

Using QAP 6.5.3. When right-clicking on QAP in the System Notification area and selecting QAPconnect.ini, QAP reports the following:

Error: Failed attempt to launch program or document: Action: Params:

    Line#
    ---> 6001: Run, %g_strQAPconnectINIPath%
    The current thread will exit.

Note: Using the same method, the QuickAccessPopup.ini opens as expected.

    0
    • Do you install QAP using the setup program or the portable procedure? In the second case, make sure the file QAPconnect.ini is correctly extracted from the zip file. If it is not there, the list of QAPconnect browsers in Options, tab "File managers" is probably empty and the "Edit QAPconnect.ini" is probaly giving the same error.

Anyway, I'll add error checking to give a more friendly error message.

      Thanks for reporting this.

Thanks for the reply Jean. You were exactly correct. I've been using the portable version. When I decompressed 6.5.3 I mistakenly renamed QAPconnect.ini to QAPconnect-orig.ini. I intended to rename QuickAccessPopup.ini. (I like to save the default version.)

Sorry for the false alarm. Feel free to remove this thread.

I'm currently using QAP v6.5.3 beta (portable). In defining hotkeys, I've observed and minor issue. When I configure the following:

^SPACE : QAP Keyboard shortcut (defined on the Menu hotkeys tab of the Options dialog)
#SPACE : open my "Favorite Programs" submenu
!SPACE : open my "Favorite Folders" submenu

QAP does not respond to #SPACE.

However, #SPACE works as expected with the following configuration:

^SPACE : open my "Favorite Programs" submenu
#SPACE : QAP Keyboard shortcut (defined on the Menu hotkeys tab of the Options dialog)
!SPACE : open my "Favorite Folders" submenu

    • Hi Jim,

I tried to reproduce the issue you are facing with Windows+Space hotkey but for me it works both for submenus and as QAP keyboard shortcut. I could not see what other condition could lead to this issue...

Jean, thanks for the reply. When I log in I have an AHK script launch -- I use this for miscellaneous hotstrings and hotkeys. Thinking that it might be the culprit, I stopped it and then launched QAP. Unfortunately I still wasn't able to launch submenus with #SPACE.

I'm using Win7 Enterprise SP1, Window Classic Theme. With my configuration, when I press the Windows key (and no other key), after a short delay the Windows Start Menu opens and the cursor is in the "Search programs and files" field (on the Start Menu). I don't know -- maybe that has something to do with the issue on my system.

This is not a big issue -- but as a beta tester I wanted to pass it along.

        • Agree with you that it is not a big issue. But if other testers have the same issue, I'll give it more time. Thank you for following up.

I’m currently using QAP v6.5.3 beta (portable). QAP has many great benefits, but for me the killer feature is that I can launch programs and open folders without taking my hands off the keyboard. Not only that, I'm able to complete these tasks with very few intuitive keystrokes. This not only substantially increase my productivity, it has a positive ergonomic effect since I'm using the mouse much less often. Yes, I'm a keyboard junky and QAP is my favorite Windows tool of this kind!

With that in mind, I have a suggestion for a minor refinement. When displaying the QAP main menu (or displaying a submenu directly using its hotkey), it would be nice if the displayed menu was replaced if another menu hotkey was pressed before action was taken with the first menu. For example, if I've used a hotkey to directly display my "Favorite Programs" submenu and I intended to actually display my "Favorite Folders" submenu, I have to first dismiss the "Favorites Programs" menu. (I've noticed that I can do that with Alt, or ESC.) Yes, it's a minor difference, but for keyboard junkies, every keystroke counts. 🙂

    0
    • Thank you for all your good words about QAP. I used to be a keyboard junky myself in the old days of WordPerfect (DOS). Now, I'm kind of 50/50 keyboard and mouse. This is probably why QAP is good at both 🙂

About your suggestion, from the moment QAP asks Windows to display a menu QAP loose control on what happens. What happens then is under Windows control. QAP get control again after you choose a menu item. So, in this situation, is Windows that decide to close the menu if you press Esc or Alt, not QAP. And, if you do that, QAP cannot do anything until you activate another trigger.

  • Please, before downloading this new version, if you used v6.5.3, take a second to answer these two questions:

    1) In v6.5.3, the "Drives" and "Recent Folders" submenus were refreshed each time you opened the popup menu. Did you find the wait time before showing the menu always acceptable?

    2) Do you use the favorites "Window Options" to set window position for applications? Did you try with Office apps (Word, Excel, etc.)? What was the success rate of the window positioning?

Please use the "Reply" form, below, to answer.

Now, the new stuff in v6.5.4. One new QAP feature requested a long time ago: "Add this Folder Express". Add it to the menu of your choice from the "QAP Features" list. This features works when with Windows Explorer and file dialog boxes windows. It add the current folder at the top of the main menu with the normal default settings and the folder's name as menu name. No question asked. If this name is already used, "[!]" is appended to the menu name. If you want to change some settings, open the Settings.

Also in this release, I decided to remove the "Drives" and "Recent Folders" from the main menu and make them back separate menus until the background refresh solution is ready.

    Version: 6.5.4 beta (2016-01-29)
    - add "Add this Folder Express" QAP feature added (add it from the QAP Features list)
    - remove "Drives" and "Recent Folders" from the main menu (back to separate menu) until background refresh solution is ready
    - enable mouse cursor to hand image when hovering buttons image or text in QAP GUI
    - add error checking if QAPconnect.ini file is not found where it should be
    - fix buttons labels alignment in Settings

  • If you prefer to reply by email to the two questions in my previous message, please do so at ahk@jeanlalonde.ca. Thanks.

    Version: 6.5.4.1 beta (2016-01-30 )
    - Fix an error in the previous release slowing down the menu display

  • After close to nine months of (part-time!) work, Quick Access Popup v7 is now ready for official release. I want to thank all beta testers for their help during development. This is not finished, I will keep the page active for further beta version that I would like to test with a smaller group of users before releasing in the official release.

Regarding my two questions above, I had no answer.

For question 1), I made my mind alone and decided to keep the "Drives" and "Recent Folders" dynamic menus separate from the main menu. This will avoid the delay before showing the main popup menu.

And for question 2), I concluded from the absence of response that this feature (window positioning) was not much used for applications. I removed it until I have time to improve it. Window position is still available for Explorer windows where it is more reliable.

You can download the official version on the home page. Bug reports can now be posted in the new Support page.

    Hello Jean,
the new version has a major problem for me.
It eats the Shift key which i use in other Autohotkey applications as hot-key modifier.
As long as QAP runs I can't use Shift-key kombinations for the other programs.
I use this in the Quick Cliq tool to start tools with enhanced rights.

    • Hi Horst,

I'm out of touwn for the week-en. I'll check it as soon as possible. This was OK with the last beta version v6.5.3? And you are using v7.0.5?

      Jean

      0
      • Horst Epp

Yes, it was ok with the latest beta version and I use the x64 version 7.0.5
I recovered by restarting QAP and will watch if the error happens again.

        0
        • Thanks for checking. And if it happens again, please check if the issue persist with a fresh ini file (quit QAP, rename your QuickAccessPopup.ini file and restart QAP).

  • Welcome to this first beta release of what will become QAP v7.1. For all users, the main change in this new release will be an easier upgrade process. Unfortunately, it will be effective only for official releases (not in beta releases). But, in this release, you can test new QAP features to shutdown or restart your computer, and a new menu item in the system menu (right-click QAP icon in Notification Area) to restart QAP after you made changes to the ini file.

And, for Total Commander users, a long-time requested integration of "TC Directory Hotlist". With QAP, Total Commander users will be able to use their hotlist not only in TC but also from file dialog boxes (Open, Save As, etc.), or inside Windows Explorer to *switch* instantly to any of their hotlist folders. Also, they will be able to call an hotlist folder inside TC from any window, at any time.

Notes for Total Commander users new to QAP:
    - The "TC Directory Hotlist" will be added automatically to the main QAP menu if TC is correctly detected when you first run QAP.
    - Or you can add it manually: in "Settings", click "Add". Select the favorite type "QAP Feature" and "TC Directory Hotlist".
    - In order to change folder in a file dialog box, make sure you enable this feature in the first tab of the "Options" window.

    Version: 7.0.9.4 BETA (2016-02-11)
    - more friendly upgrade process with dialog box, direct download links and easy access to change log (used only for public releases - not for beta releases)
    - add "Shutdown Computer" and "Restart Computer" QAP features (select in "Add favorite" dialog box, select favorite type "QAP Feature")
    - add a "Restart Quick Access Popup" menu in the QAP system menu (right-clickon the QAP icon in the Notification Area) to reload QAP after changes in the ini file
    - for Total Commander users:
      > add the "TCC Directory Hotlist" QAP feature showing the TC hotlist content in a hierarchical submenu (select in "Add favorite" dialog box, select favorite type "QAP Feature" and choose "TC Directory Hotlist")
      > add "TC Directory Hotlist" menu to QAP main menu at the very first use of QAP if Total Commander is detected and activated
    - create the QAPconnect.ini file from a default master if it does not already exist in the working directory (QAPconnect.ini will not be overwritten anymore when installing a new version)
    - removed "Edit QAPconnect.ini" item from QAP system menu (it is still available from "Options", "File Managers", select "QAPconnect")
    - fix a bug in check for update, not remembering when user want to skip the new version
    - fix a bug found in v7.0.1 in code refreshing Clipboard menu

    Hello Jean,
I've added the TC Directory Hotlist.
The menu entry is displayed but it doesn't do anything
Tested it with running TC and without.
TC of course is configured and works fine with all other QAP entries.

    • Hi Horst,

That's bad. I had a similar issue while developping this feature and was able to resolve it for me. I will add some debugging code for the next release and will ask you to send me te debugging info.

Other users having the same issue?

      Thanks.

      • Horst Epp

I found the problem now !
QAP is reading wincmd.in from "C:\Users\horst_000\AppData\Roaming"
but in my case this is only a stub which contains just the following:

        [Configuration]
        InstallDir=c:\tools\wincmd

The real wincmd.ini is in the InstallDir of TC because its a fully portable installation.
So I guess you have to search for the above entry and use the location from it
if it doesn't contain the Hotlist entry.

        0
        • Horst Epp

I copied the wincmd.ini for further testing and found that DirMenu entries like
          cd ::{031E4825-7B94-4DC3-B131-E946B44C8DD5}
are not resolved by QAP but have no problems in TC itself.
All entries which start with "cd ::" are not resolved an display an error message.

          0
        • OK. I'll add an entry in the "Options", "File managers" tab where you can enter the path to the wincmd.ini file.

    Hi,
very keen to integrate portable QAP in my portable TotalCommander and test. Portable TC configuration is specific, wincmd.ini is not in folder of TC executable and section [DirMenu] is redirected from wincmd.ini to an own ini.

Change folder in TC by QAP is working once the Path of the portable TC executable was configured in File managers support. “QAP Feature” pulldown does not list “TC Directory Hotlist”.
Any chance to get TC Directory Hotlist working ?

    • Hi batchman61,

Thank you for joining the beta tests. As mentioned earlier, I'll add an entry in the "Options", "File managers" tab where you can enter the path to the wincmd.ini file. This should make the "TC Directory Hotlist" available. Stay tuned for the next eta release during the week-end.

        Hi Jean,

thanks for the new version, TC Directory Hotlist is working now.

Seen a glitch regarding portable configuration:

QAP is started from a portable Environment using PORTABLE_*** variables, QuickAccessPopup.ini was set to:
        TotalCommanderPath=%PORTABLE_TCEXEPATH%
        TotalCommanderWinCmd=%PORTABLE_TCINIPATH%

Start QAP, open Settings, select Options, click Save, Close.
QuickAccessPopup.ini is modified by this. TotalCommanderPath is set to the value of %PORTABLE_TCEXEPATH% now (eg. TotalCommanderPath=D:\portable\wincmd\totalcmd64.exe), thus no longer portable.

  • This release should solve the issue related to the Total Commander Wincmd.ini file location. When you select Total Commander in Options, File managers tab, a new option Wincmd.ini location is displayed. Select the TC file location. The default location is taken from the TC info in Windows Registry. Save Options and check if the menu is correctly displayed.

Some entries (beginning by "::") will not work yet. But let's first confirm if the menu data can be read?

    0
    • If the TC Directory Hotlist does not appear in the QAO features dropdown list after you saved options, quit and restart QAP. It will be there. This is something I also have to fix.

    Hello Jean,

TC Directory Hotlist works fine now.
With this QAP has added an important function for TC support.

    0
  • Horst Epp

There is one function missing for the TC dir menu.
TC allows to also set the target path for an entry
but QAP only sets the source path of such entries.

  • If there is no bug, this should be the last release before going with v7.1.

    Version: 7.0.9.7 BETA (2016-02-13)
    - add Total Commander icon to QAP feature "TC Directory hotlist"
    - support for special folders (starting with "::") in TC Directory hotlist, incuding Windows default icon
    - if WinCmd.ini file is not found, give an error message when user try to add the QAP feature "TC Directory Hotlist"
    - support relative path and environment variables for WinCmd.ini path
    - support Windows environment variables in TC Directory hotlist locations

There is no warning on start-up and only on sub-sequent actions entries are written.

  • This is the first beta release. First, I wanted to make the "Close this menu" available in all menu, including dynamic menus.

    Version BETA: 7.1.99.11 (2016-05-02)
    - fix bug Settings window opening occasionally when clicking on the QAP tray icon
    - fix bug when trying to get a Snippet location using Alternative menu feature "Copy a Favorite's Path or URL"
    - add the auto-detection of .ahk and .vbs extensions when user add a favorite using drag-and-drop to the Settings window
    0
  • After hours of trial/error/diagnostic work, I must give up. My tentatives to solve the "close menu issue" were unsuccessful (see What is the “close menu issue”?). An experienced programmer suggested to use a low-level Windows command to keep the focus on the QAP menu (retaining the capability to close or escape the menu normally). But this command had various random side-effects that I could not control (especially when QAP is running compiled to an .exe file).

So, for users having this issue, the solution is to add a "Close this menu" option in their menus. This has been added to v7.1.99.1.

This new version v7.1.99.2 (for you to test, please) fixes various bugs. When I'm comfortable with this beta version, I will release it as v7.1.10. Then, I will start working on new stuff!

    Version BETA: 7.1.99.2 (2016-03-31)
    Bug fixes:
    - Start in folder (Working directory) in application favorites now properly passed to the application
    - exclusion list in Options is now considered only for QAP mouse button (middle mouse button by default), not for keyboard hotkey (Windows+W by default)
    - set window info and menu position for alternative menu hotkey command
    - set menu position when menu is called from a hotkey
    - correctly set target window when favorite is called from a favorite hotkey or when submenu is called from a menu favorite hotkey
    - clipboard menu don't have empty lines at end of menu anymore
    - better error messages if a target app (Explorer, Console, other file manager, etc.) is unknown when trying to open a favorite

    Tried but not retained:
    - when menu is called from main hotkey, implemented SwitchToThisWindow and restore active window before open favorite
(not retained because of side effects especially when QAP runs in compiled mode: script hidden window or main GUI being randomly/occasionally shown)

      Hi Jean,

I have just used the Easy one-step installation file to update my QAP and it keeps popping up the message that there is a newer version 7.1.99.5. It looks like I'm running in circles now as the above link seems to install 7.1.99.4.

      1+
  • Horst

I don't like that I have to use Enter for inserting a Snippet if using a mouse button or from the tray..
I also inserts an additional new empty line at the insertion point of the current program (tested with various tools).

    0
    • The reason for the 5 seconds delay is to let the user select the exact insertion point before sending the snippet. My hypothesis being that keyboard users already have selected the insertion point before calling the popup menu, while mouse users would not. I may be wrong. In the next release, I will remove this delay for mouse users and we can see if it works well (I'll work on the next release tonight).

However, I must keep this step when the popup is open from the Notification zone icon. When user select the snippet from the menu open that way, no window has the focus and there is no known insertion point for the snippet. When the user click the tray icon, QAP does not know what was the previous active window and cannot return focus to it. For this reason, unless someone has a better idea, I must give a way for the user to activate the target window with the correct insertion point.

Sorry, I missed to set the insertion point first after the tray icon usage.
        So its working as before.

        • Hi Horst,

Would you prefer a longer delay before timing out ?

Would you prefer another key than Enter to press to end the wait?

Have you tried to insert a snippet calling the menu with the mouse trigger (middle mouse button)? I removed the delay to see if it is more convenient and safe.

          Thanks.

I use version 7.1.99.6 beta and I created a submenu like this :
    - Fast texts
    - Email #1
    - Email #2
    - Email #3
    - Email #4

When I try to insert the text in Notepad, it works properly but when I try to use it in Google Keep (using Chrome) it doesn't import the right thing. In the search field of Google Keep or in the title of a note, it always imports the content of the clipboard but in the content of the note, it works properly.

    0
    • Hi Sebastien,

I was not able to reproduce this issue in Google Keep. Pasting snippet to the note main text zone worked well. But I do not use this service regularly. Maybe it would happen some time.

FYI, QAP is using the clipboard to paste snippets. Before doing it, it makes a backup of the clipboard content and restore it after the snippet is pasted. Do you mean that in the situation you describe, the previous content of the clipboard is pasted instead of the snippet?

    - removing external menu (does not delete the external menu settings file)
    - build menu including external menu
    - support relative paths and env vars in external menu settings file path
    - make starting line in external ini file read-only when editing favorite (cause error if allowed)

    Snippet:
    - wait for Enter up to 10 seconds (instead of 5) when paste a snippet with QAP menu popped from QAP icon on the Tray (Notification area)
    - wait for Enter when QAP menu is popped from anywhere on the taskbar (Shell_TrayWnd) using the middle mouse button
    - improve reliability by inserting 0.1 secs delays before and after modifying or pasting the clipboard's content
    - additional code to keep the target active window after QAP menu is closed

Gorgeous, Jean!!! I'm so pleased to read how you already thought further the external menu functionality! Especially the read only setting for ini files on shared drives! Can't wait to test the new functionality in the coming days. Of course I will give additional feedback with my experiences. Thanks again for these great additions to QAP!! Cheers, Helge

      • Thank you Helge. Looking forward for your test results. This feature made me rework very deep in the QAP internal structure. This required a big regression testing effort. I hope we won't find hidden side effects.

  • Helge

First impression, Jean: It works great! So far I haven't experienced any problems but I have to admit that I just tested for a couple of minutes so far. Still have test e.g. the write protection / settings lock feature for the QAP ini file.

Now I can run QAP on clients locally which improves e.g. the autostart reliability which wasn't very good when I executed QAP from a network share.

    Some additional thoughts:

    - I could imagine that there still might be issues after Windows restart and a network share not available in time. QAP would probably not load the external settings file then. One way to solve this would be to use the restart feature of QAP in the QAP context menu. Another approach could be that QAP periodically tries to access the file at least for 1 minute or so.

    - I tried to insert http links and it didn't work. I don't know if it would be possible to also access such kind of links for QAP settings ini files

    Thanks,
    Helge

    • Hi Helge,

In v7.1.99.7, there is very little error management if external settings file cannot be read/written. At this time, an error is reported but the menu load is aborted and QAP cannot load. In next beta release (v7.1.99.8) QAP will give an error and continue loading leaving the external submenu empty (greyed out). When saving an external menu, QAP has to remember that an error occurred at load time to avoid writing an empty external menu if the settings file is back for saving.

For your second point, URLs can be transformed to UNC and used as file path for settings file. This will be implemented in v7.1.99.8. At this time, you can do the transformation yourselve following this example:

Transform from "http:" to "\\" (WevDAV to UNC), example:

      From: http://abc.server.com/folder/subfolder/external.ini
      To: \\abc.server.com\folder\subfolder\external.ini

      See: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1344910/get-the-content-of-a-sharepoint-folder-with-excel-vba

        Hi Jean,

thank you for the additional information.

I tried the url conversion but it didn't work. There's no error message but the external menu item remains greyed out.

        Thanks,
        Helge

  • Do you experience the same intermittent issue?

Very occasionally, when opening the popup menu by left-clicking the tray icon, the popup menu is displayed (as expected) but the Settings window is displayed at the same time, which is not expected.

I can't find a regular pattern that would guide me in finding the cause of this issue. All I can tell is that it is happening only in the compiled version (the one you use), never in the uncompiled version used during development.

Please let me know it you see this behavior and if you can see anything looking like a specific pattern that could explain it.

Bad version, it again pops up the settings when I start it from the tray icon.
This was not the case with the prvious beta for me.

      • Horst

It does it not always but often.
I don't see a rule how to trigger it.

        0
      • Thanks for searching a pattern. I reviewed the code more than often and could not see what cause this.

      • Horst, could you try running the 32-bit version for some time? I did not had th issue (yet) with the 32-bit version.

Features are 100% identical in both 64-bit and 32-bit versions.

        0
        • Horst

I've tested the 32-bit version today.
          No issue with settings pop-up
but a few hangs of the TC menu which required the usage of "Close this menu"
So it looks like the 32-bit version doesn't have the settings pop-up problem
but the x64 version also had that only a few times.

          0
  • @Horst: There may be something wrong in my code but these test results make me thing that the issue could be related to the AHK runtime version. Here is a new QAP version built with the latest AHK runtime (no change in code) Let's see if this changes something. If not, another test could be to revert to an older version of the AHK runtime.

    Version BETA: 7.1.99.10 (2016-04-30)
    - new runtime v1.1.23.5 from AHK
    - same features

    • Horst

      Hello Jean,
this x64 version its even worse than the previous ones.
I can produce the unwanted settings pop-up just by using TC menu or favorite hotkey a few times
followed by a left click on the tray-icon.
Then its starting with the pop-up for almost every left click on the tray
until I use some other hotkey or favorite.
What I never see in this version is the need for "Close this menu"
its always closing correctly by clicking somewhere.

I also tested the x86 version and it produces the same unwanted settings pop-up
and even some hangs on the TC menu, requiring to use "Close this menu".

    Hi

I just loaded QAP 7.1.99.10 Beta x64 (under Windows 7 Pro x64 SP1) and Snippets works perfectly!

Would it be possible to allow Snippets to execute Autohotkey commands?
I use Autohotkey to run commands based on hotkeys e.g. ^!f::Run, C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe
Since Quick Access Popup already sends text strings using a hotkey i.e. by associating a hotkey to a Text Snippet, how complicated is it to add this possibility?

    Thanks!

    • Horst

Why should that be better than using an application favorite ?
With application favorites you can start whatever you want.

You are absolutely right 🙂 Thank you for the fast answer (and thank you to Jean Lalonde for adding all these great features to QAP)

      • Pedro

Ah, but there is a catch... How would I execute a program with a command line switch (e.g. E:\Other\EmergeDesktop\emergeCore.exe /nostartup)? Application favorite does not accept that...

        0
    • Thank you Pedro for your good words and to Horst for handling this question.

Horst is right. Application favorite type can handle not only .exe files but also .bat, .vbs or .ahk. This being said, I realize that I have to add the auto-detection of .ahk and .vbs extensions when user add a favorite using drag-and-drop to the Settings window. This will be in the next release.

On another note, FYI, I'm planing to add support for some commands in snippets when you select "macro mode". Something like:
      - {QAP-WaitKey:keyname, options}: pause sending the snippet until user press the specified key (see https://autohotkey.com/docs/commands/KeyWait.htm)
      - {QAP-Pause:nnnn}: pause sending the snippet for nnnn milliseconds (see https://autohotkey.com/docs/commands/Sleep.htm)
      - {QAP-Delay:nn, option}: speed down the sending of the snippet )see https://autohotkey.com/docs/commands/SetKeyDelay.htm)

      Feedback on this?

      1+
      • Maybe I should name the command {QAP-Sleep:nnnn} (instead of Pause) to keep consistency with AHK. And {QAP-KeyWait...} (instead of WaitKey) for the same reason.

        Hi Jean

First of all thank you for creating and releasing QAP freely. This is an essential utility and I would use it even if it only allowed to switch folders (under Win XP I used to use Anvir).

The fact that QAP is Autohotkey based and has all the launch and type features of AHK allows me to simply run QAP (i.e. I don't need to load AHK also).

I'm not an advanced AHK user so I probably won't benefit from the added script ability but it makes complete sense that these features are supported in QAP.

Again, thank you for QAP and for listening to users!

  • I will wait for your confirmation before crying victory (bad translation of French "crier victoire") being sure it is fixed but I think I found the cause for the Settings window bug. If I am right, this issue affected only users setting Total Commander or Directory Opus as their file manager.

@Horst, since you are using TC, could you please confirm that this release does not produce the Settings window bug?

    Version BETA: 7.1.99.11 (2016-05-02)
    - fix bug Settings window opening occasionally when clicking on the QAP tray icon
    - fix bug when trying to get a Snippet location using Alternative menu feature "Copy a Favorite's Path or URL"
    - add the auto-detection of .ahk and .vbs extensions when user add a favorite using drag-and-drop to the Settings window

      Hello Jean,
      Success
I was not able to produce the settings pop-up bug.

The only small problem left is the need for "Close this menu"
sometimes after I invoke the TC menu from a mouse kee.
But I can live with this.

  • Thanks to all beta testers for your help making QAP v7.2 ready for public distribution.

On the main menu if you have to many sub menus some are forced off the screen and can't be accessed. You need a scroll up and down on the main menu to access all of your sub menus categories .

      0
      • Yes, probably. I should test with a very large number of submenus. But you can nest submenus inside submenus to avoid having too many submenus in the main menu.

Also, you can try to insert column breaks (the vertical bar in the Settings left side).

        Thanks for your input, Michael.

Also my wife is a diabetic with weak eyes do I need to use the largest icon setting for witch only allows 2 sub menus to ne added without cutting off some of the menu. So why not just put a scroll arrow at the bottom when your screen isn't high enough. See my wife's laptop is a 17 inch wide screen so I see adding a scroll arrows top and bottom a easy and best fix. Please consider adding this feature Thank You.

          • I understand your issue. Unfortunately, QAP menus are built using standard Windows commands and are displayed the same way Windows does for its own menus. Some program completely rewrite their menus but this is not an approach I want to take in order to keep QAP as light and portable as possible.

Maybe the Windows Control Panel offers some ways to change menus behavior. I hope you will find a way to make it work better for you and your wife.

            Regards.

  • Before getting to Explorer context menus, I want to complete the macro snippet feature set with three commands that will make sending keystrokes to your keyboard from QAP much more flexible and reliable.

    Version BETA: 7.2,1.1 (2016-05-04)
    - support following command in macro snippet:  {&Sleep:n} or {&n}, {&SetKeyDelay:n, option} and {&KeyWait:keyname, options}
    - addition of Portugue language (thanks to Luis Neves!)

    Hi Jean. I'm using 7.2.1 portable. Macro mode snippets look really cool, but I'm seeing a two issues: 1) When I create a macro mode snippet and launch it (by opening the QAP menu with a hotkey, and then select the macro snippet by clicking on it within the QAP menu), I still see the tooltip prompting me: Select the insertion point and then hit ... (waiting 10 seconds) Unless I'm misunderstanding something, it seems like this tooltip should only appear if the snippet type is Text mode. 2) It appears that "sleep" is being ignored. When I try a subset of your macro mode example [ {&SetKeyDelay:50}#r{&500}notepad{Enter} ], the Run dialog is opened, but "pad", not "notepad" is automatically entered into the "Open:" field. The following, more verbose, syntax similarly failed: {&SetKeyDelay:50}#r{&sleep:500}notepad{Enter}

    • Hi Jim,

When I updated the Snippet Help Page , yesterday, I forgot to mention that the macro snippets documentation in this page is related to the newest beta version. Please download the beta version v7.2.1.1.

I just updated the page. Sorry for the confusion.

Hi Jean. Thanks for the clarification. I downloaded v7.2.1.1 and SetKeyDelay and Sleep now work as expected. In fact, your full notepad example on the Snippet Help Page works with one small caveat...

Under certain circumstances I still see the aforementioned tooltip. For simple testing, I put your Snippet (Macro mode) example as the first item in the QAP main menu. When I launch that snippet using the keyboard only, I don't see the tooltip. But when I launch the snippet using the following steps, I see the tooltip 1) open the QAP main menu using the QAP hotkey, 2) launch the Snippet (Macro mode) by *clicking* the Snippet in the QAP main menu. This isn't a big issue for me because I normally launch all QAP items using the keyboard, but I thought you'd still want this reported.

Thanks for you're your continued improvement of QAP!

        • I agree that the pause may not be required for *macro* snippets.

Just for the record, an explanation why this pause is required for *text* snippets in some situation. When the QAP menu is called by clicking the notification icon or middle-clicking the taskbar, there is no "active" window where to paste the snippet. The pause gives time to the user to select the window and insertion point, then press Enter.

For macro snippet, some macros may require a given window to be active. I will add a text box called "Prompt before launching the macro" in the Edit Favorite Advanced tab. This will allow the user to display a reminder of the pre-requisites for the macro. If this text box is empty, the macro will be launched without pause (except if this is a text snippet launched from the taskbar - in this case QAP will display the actual prompt).

Thank you for the continued development!
Looking forward to Windows Explorer context menus! Hopefully that will work with other file managers (e.g. Altap Salamander, Double Commander) as well?

      0
      • Hi Pedro,

I realize that I missed your question about Altap Salamander and Double Commander. These file managers are already supported with the QAPconnect option. In "Options", tab "File Managers", select "QAPconnect", then "Edit QAPconnect.ini" to setup the required info about the file manager you want to use, and, finally, select your file manager in the "Application" list.

  • This is a first beta release with CONTEXT MENUS ! This new feature is actually only available to users who choose the Setup ("one-step") installation. In a future release, I will give portable version users instructions on how to enable/disable context menus manually.

This release also includes a small utility that will fix menu icon errors introduced when users upgrade from Windows 7/8 to Windows 10. For example, if after upgrading to Windows 10 you see weird icons for submenus, run this small utility. More info here: How can I restore my icons that got replaced after I updated from Windows 7 to Windows 10?

    Version BETA: 7.2.3.1 (2016-05-29)

    Context menus (setup install only)
    - add an option to enable/disable QAP Explorer context menus (enabling or disabling requires running with administrator privileges)
    - at first QAP execution, when ini file is absent, enable context menu if the option was selected in Setup program
    - context menu enabled in Explorer folders and files icons, Explorer background (white space) and Desktop background
    - context menu actions: Add Folder to Quick Access Popup menu (regular and express), Add File to Quick Access Popup menu (regular and express), Show Quick Access Popup menu, Show Quick Access Popup Alternative menu

Other (setup install and portable install)
    - add advanced option for application favorite to run apps with elevated privileges using the run as command
    - for users of QAP upgrading from Windows 7 to WIndows 10, add a utility to update icons to the new icon files in Windows 10

If I use the context menu "Add folder to Quick Access Popup menu"
in Total Commander or Windows Explorer
there comes always the error "Application not found" with the name of the directory I want to add.
I used the the setup-version for installation in Windows 10 x64.

    0
    • Horst

I found that your setup routine did not recognize that I changed the default path
      in the installation.
It installed the program correctly in the selected location but added registry keys
      for the default installation path.
This is a serious error for a setup routine as not every user accepts the default installation path.

      0
    • Horst

Also the uninstall entry in the control panel doesn't remove the context menu entries.

      0
    • Oops! You are correct. This is something I forgot on the todo list. Easy to fix. The uninstall will be a little more tricky because context menus must be deleted by QAP, not the setup/uninstall program itself. I'll fix the path issue first and release a new beta with it first.

      Thanks Horst.

      0
      • In the current QAP setup configuration (approach #1), the registry keys are created by QAP at its first execution. The setup program (Inno Setup) is only passing a value to QAP via an ini file to tell if the registry keys should be created or not by QAP. Aftert that, QAP can create or remove the keys if the "Context menus" option is enabled/disabled in the QAP Options window.

Another approach (approach #2) would be to have the keys created by the setup program itself. This would allow to rely on the uninstall function of this program to handle the registry keys deletion. In this scenario, QAP would still create or remove the keys if "Context menus" option is enabled/disabled in QAP Options window.

A third option (approach #3) would be to create or delete keys *only* from QAP. The context menus options would be removed from the Setup program and made available only in the QAP Options window. But, with this scenario, user would have to disable the option from QAP before uninstalling it. If he/she does not, phantom context menus would exist after QAP deletion.

I think approach #2 is the best. I'll work on this in the next days.

        0
      • Progress report: Implementing approach #2, I coded the Inno setup script to create the registry keys for a first context menu. The uninstall script appropriately remove the registry keys. I now have to replicate this for the 9 other context menus, then check the info exchange between the setup script and the QAP settings. More to come in the next days...

  • This fixes the path bug identified by Horst. Thanks again Horst.

    Version BETA: 7.2.3.2 (2016-05-30)
    - fix a path bug, now using custom path selected in setup program

    0
  • This new version implements the approach #2 described above. Now, the setup script always create context menus (not a setup option anymore), this making sure that the registry keys for context menus are always removed when uninstalling QAP.

QAP can still disable or re-enable the context menus without needing to run the setup program.

Context menus are still reserved to "easy setup" users, not for portable install users. I will soon send a manual procedure for users who prefer the portable installs but who would also want to setup the context menus.

I will wait for a few users to confirm that this setup procedure works well before releasing it in the master version. Please, give feedback not only for bugs but ALSO to confirm that it does the job.

    Version BETA: 7.2.3.3 (2016-06-08)

  • Context menus are now ready for users who choose *portable installation*. You will have to do some editing to adapt the install and uninstall scripts to your configuration. See the instructions in each of these two files.

Also, see the new Context menus help page.

I am STILL waiting for a other users to confirm that this setup procedure works well before releasing it in the master version. You can do it by email if you prefer: ahk@jeanlalonde.ca. Thanks for participating to this beta test and for giving FEEDBACK 🙂

  • A bug reported by email: "The "Add this folder..." option is added to the context menu and it's working perfectly except when I add a Drive (left click on e.g. D:). In that case it will add a single quote on the Short name field and D:" on the Folder (path) field".

I'll fix it for the next release.

    • This has been fixed in version v7.2.3.5 beta and now in the new master release v7.3 available on QAP home page.

    Hello,
I usually run QAP (7.2.3.4, Windows 7 64 bits Pro) as Administrator. When I click on context menu items, I get "An error occurred. Make sur QAP is running [...]. No problem if I run QAP as normal user.

    0
    • Horst

Regardless of the error its not a god idea to run QAP as Administrator.
Everything started from QAP will the also run with enhanced rights.
A very bad decission for your system security

    • I'm not an expert in ACL (access control list) but, from what I understand, the Windows Explorer context menu can only call apps having privileges equal or lower than Explorer has. If you still want to call QAP running at an elevated level, you would need to tweak the registry entries. I could not help you with this but you can take a look at this post to see if it can help.

      Thanks Laurent for reporting this.

  • One fix to context menus when adding a drive root as folder. But, more important in this release, something I would have done before if I I had thought earlier. The "Add This Folder" command can now be used when the QAP menu is called from the QAP icon in the Notification zone. Before this version, the "Add This Folder" command required the user to open the menu in the target windows (Explorer) using the Middle mouse button or Windows + W. This is not required anymore.

Last call for comments or confirmation that the setup procedure for context menus works well before releasing it in the master version. You can do it here or by email: ahk@jeanlalonde.ca.

    Version BETA: 7.2.3.5 (2016-06-16)
    Context menus
    - fix bug when adding folder from context menu and target folder is a drive root (e.g. C:\)

    Other
    - when "Add This Folder" command is called from QAP icon in the Notification zone, reactivate the last used file manager window (Explorer, DOpus or TC) before getting the current folder
    - add tip dialog box if "Add This Folder" command failed after being called from QAP icon in the Notification zone

  • Fixes for small bugs or issues before the next master release v7.3.

Probably the last beta release before v7.3. Last call for comments or confirmation that the setup procedure for context menus works well before releasing it in the master version. You can do it here or by email: ahk@jeanlalonde.ca.

    Version BETA: 7.2.3.6 (2016-06-20)
    - when called from QAP icon in the Notification zone, display the popup menu higher than the taskbar area

  • This new beta version implements the request "enable/disable an item instead of having to delete those items". A new option in the Add/Edit dialog box first tab allows to "Hide this favorite from menu".

In your tests, please test any combination of hidden favorites and column breaks in main and sub menus since these three features are interrelated when comes the time to activate a favorite.

As always, please let me know not only if you find bugs but also if your tests are positive.

    Thanks.

There appears to be a version numbering issue. Is the latest beta 7.2.9.1 or 7.3.9.1?

    • You are correct. I fixed it. The error was only in filenames. The version number inside the app is OK.

      Thanks for reportin it.

  • A small but interesting new beta release. Alternative menu features like "Copy location to clipboard" or "Edit Favorite" are now available from the regular menu. When you have the mouse over a favorite in the menu, before clicking the item, press one of the keyboard modifiers:

    • - Shift to open the favorite in a new window
    • - Control to copy favorite's location to the Clipboard
    • - or Shift + Control to edit the favorite

Quite handy... I should have done this long before 😉 I'm calling this feature "menu modifiers". And, before you ask, the Alt key is not available because it closes the menu as soon as you press it.

    Version BETA: 7.4.0.1 (2016-07-31)
    - keybord modifiers when selecting a favorite in the popup menu (Shift for "Open in New Window", Control for "Copy Favorite Location" and Shift+Control for "Edit Favorite")
    - save settings without closing the Settings window if one of the keys Shift, Control or Alt is pressed when clicking the Save button

    Minor bug fixes
    - when a shared menu was just added, location column in Settings favorites now show ">>" (symbol for Shared menu) instead of ">" (symbol for regular menus)
    - display proper error message when trying to launch a Link favorite with an invalid URL
    0
  • A "small changes" release. Just before releasing v7.4.1 for all users.

    Version BETA: 7.4.0.2 (2016-08-16)
    New in this release:
    - show the "change folder in dialog boxes" alert just before opening a favorite instead of before showing the menu
    - show the "change folder in dialog boxes" alert (only) the first time the user selects a favorite folder over a dialog box
    - simplifiy "change folder in dialog boxes" option (no more double checkbox)
    - do not save submenu path to ini file - this is not required and could be misleading when external menu are saved in different locations (but save for groups - fixed in v7.4.1)
    - updated Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Portuguese-Brazilian, German and Sweden language files
    0
  • IMPORTANT NOTE for BETA testers who:
    - executed v7.4.0.2
    - have one or more groups in their favorites
    - saved their favorites with v7.4.0.2

If this is your case, the settings for your group favorites were corrupted and these groups should not load actually (even if running an older or a future version of QAP). Sorry about that. To fix it, you can return to a backup of your settings (QuickAccessPopup.ini) or, if you do not want to lose your recent changes, follow this simple procedure:

    - run a previous version of QAP (official v7.4 would do it) or wait for v7.4.1 to be released tomorrow
    - open the "Settings" window
    - for each group in your favorites:
    - - edit the group favorite (where you find group name, etc.) - you don't need to change any property
    - - just save your group favorite
    - click "Save" to save your Settings

This will restore the "group paths", an internal value that QAP needs for groups and that was removed from settings by error. Sorry again about this.

  • Two significant new features in this beta release: 1) import/export settings and 2) switch settings file. These additions will give more flexibility and power to users managing their favorites. After beta tests, this will be released as v7.5.

    Version BETA: 7.4.3.2 (2016-09-05)

    - import from any existing .ini file complying with QuickAccessPopup.ini structure
    - export QuickAccessPopup.ini sections to any existing or new Windows configuration (.ini) file
    - replace or append favorites to the destination settings file
    - check for unsaved settings before importing or exporting setings
    - reload QAP after settings import

    Switch Settings file:
    - add "Switch Settings file" menu to Tray menu (right-click QAP icon in Notification zone)

    - check for unsaved settings before switching settings file
    - reload QAP after switching to a new settings file

    Other:
    - Total Commander "TC Hotlist" menu can now read hotlist data when AlternateUserIni parameter is used in [Configuration] section of wincmd.ini
    - QAP feature "Switch" excludes Windows 10 apps auto-loaded from Switch app menu (work in progress)

  • First test with new code signing sertificate!

    Version BETA: 7.4.3.3 (2016-09-08)
    - Add "Import/Export Settings" and "Switch Settings" features to QAP Features list (allowing to insert these features to any menu)
    - Test for code signing certificate
    0
  • An interesting new beta release for your testing!

    1) "Live Folders" is the name of a new option for folders favorite. When you enable this option, instead of a shortcut to the folder itself, QAP builds a submenu with all the subfolders inside this favorite folder. This allows you to jump to the folder itself or to any of its subfolders.

In the advanced settings, you can set the number of levels of subfolders to scan. Be conservative because scanning subfolders to build the submenu takes time. Start by keeping this number low (1 or 2) and augment it gradually. At this time, if you enter a number too large for a folder with many subfolders, QAP just stops working. I have to find how to prevent this (and optimize if possible).

Another option (disabled in this version) will allow to ask the submenu to be refreshed each time the QAP menu will be called. Of course, this will slowdown the display of the QAP menu. When this will be ready, we will see how usable it is.

    2) Another new feature is an old request that was sleeping for too long in the wishlist: call the QAP menu by hitting the Control key twice. This option is in Options' second tab.

    Version BETA: 7.5.9.1 (2016-10-02)

    Live Folder favorites
    - Option in Add favorite dialog box to display a favorite of type Folder as a subfolders menu
    - In Advanced Settings, an option to set the number of subfolders levels included in the Live Folder menu, 1 by default (keep it low for large folders)
    - In Advanced Settings, an option to refresh the Live Folder every time the menu is displayed, off by default (disabled in this version)

    Other new feature
    - Add left or right Ctrl + Ctrl (press left or right Control twice) to open main QAP menu (enable this in Options, tab 2).

    Language updates
    - Spanish and French

    • Helge

Thank you for the live folder feature, Jean!

      I noted two things:

      - I was not able to choose a sorting (e.g. by name, date, etc.)

      - when I selected a local folder the folders were sorted in alphabetical order, when I selected a network folder the folders were not sorted in alphabetical order (I can't tell by which logic they were sorted)

One additional feature idea for directories with many folders:

      - Like you can set QAP menus to show up in column layout it would be nice if the live folders could also be presented in columns.

      Best,
      Helge

      • Hi Helge,

        - I was not able to choose a sorting (e.g. by name, date, etc.)
        - when I selected a local folder the folders were sorted in alphabetical order, when I selected a network folder the folders were not sorted in alphabetical order (I can't tell by which logic they were sorted)

In this release, folders in the live folders are sorted in the order the OS returns the content of the folder (alphabetical order for NTFS file system, and no particular order / or creation order for other file systems). I should make sure we have alphabetical sorting.

        - One additional feature idea for directories with many folders:
        - Like you can set QAP menus to show up in column layout it would be nice if the live folders could also be presented in columns.

Yes. The challenge here is to determine where to insert the column breaks? This would be possible but hard to calculate it based on the screen height. But I would prefer to let the user set the number of items per column, or no column at all and let Windows scroll the menu content.

        Jean

          Hi Jean,

sorry, I had not replied to your response.

I like the with the number of items for the columns. It sounds like a flexible and still intuitive approach.

I'm glad you were able to replicate the issue I have with the sorting on network folders. For me this is not such an important thing currently as I don't have a use case for me at the moment. But I guess you will have a look at it at some time if there's an opportunity from your side to influence the sorting.

          Thanks,
          Helge

          • Thanks for the follow up, Helge. These issue are now solved (see v7.5.9.2 below).

    Hello Jean,
I suggest for Live Folders to not only include the sub-folders but also to display the files in the folders as menu.
This would get QAP to the same functionality as tools like Listary or Quick Cliq

    1+
    • Hi Horst,

I will try it and make it available in the next beta release. My concern about this is the time it takes to build a menu with a greater number of items.

Have you tried the Ctrl+Ctrl hotkey? It is one of your old suggestion.

      Jean

  • Please see this post about a serious bug fixed in v7.5.4.1. This fix is also included in this new beta release.
    http://www.quickaccesspopup.com/support/#comment-12161

About Live Folders, a follow up on your suggestions: sorting is done, documents and columns are added as options in advanced settings.

Because of the refresh time when menu includes live folders, I stopped refreshing the menu after each add or edit favorite. Menu is now refreshed only when you save the menu or when you Shift-Click the Save button to avoid closing the Settings window (to make this option more visible, I will add "Refresh Menu" button in a future release).

I also improved the "QAP working" message to include the name of the menu currently updated. This will help identifying live folders that take too much time to build.

    Version BETA: 7.5.9.2 (2016-10-09)
    - Update MANDATORY: risk of QAP favorites data loss!
    - From v7.5.4.1: Fix bug when canceling changes to Favorites list in Settings, that could then potentially cause loss of data if saving new changes to settings file after cancellation
    - Related to this bug: add live folder settings to backup in case user cancels settings changes

    Live Folders
    - Remove Refresh option
    - Add Documents option to include files in live folders
    - Add Columns option to set the number of items per columns in liove folder menu (empty for no column)
    - Sort live folders content with folders first, then files
    - Replace the "QAP working" rebuild notification with a tooltip displayed at mouse location and listing the updated menus;
    - Stop rebuilding all menus after each add or edit favorite
    - Language for live folder options, English and French

    Other
    - Fix bug after favorites saved with Shift-Save

Thanks for implementing Live folders including documents, works fine so far.
But I miss the documents for folders which do not contain any sub-folders.
In this case the documents should be displayed.

      0
      • That's true. I've seen this bug but forgot it when I started working on the "cancel-then-change-and-save" bug (described earlier). I put it on my todo list.

    • Horst

One more suggestion for Live folders.
We should be able to click on the main entry of a Iive folder to get into it
without the need for using the topmost entry of its content display.
      For example if it displays
      c:\backups>
I want to click on this line to enter c:\backups and not one of its expanded folders or documents.

      0
      • I would like to allow it but it seems to be a Windows menu limitation: you cannot click (or shift-click) a menu entry that is a submenu. All you can do is to open the submenu. This is why I had to make this special entry at the top of the live folder submenu.

        0
        • Horst

There must be some trick or special settings which allows it.
Listary displays its menus the same way and I can click the top level without going deeper.

          0
          • Listary probably builds/draws its own menu from scratch. QAP is relying on standard Windows menu. Using Windows commands to build menus is one of the things that keeps QAP very light.

            0
      • Horst, I'm not sure if this is what you meant but, in the next beta release, QAP will stop showing a "virtual" sub-menu if a folder under a live folder does not contain other sub folders or documents.

In the v7.9.1.1, under a live folder, a folder with no subfolder will include an unnecessary submenu with only the "! Submenu name !" virtual submenu. This will be fixed in v7.9.1.2.

      Nice new icons.
I suggest to make Recent Folder a live menu.

      0
      • Hi Horts,

The Recent folders menu could not be handled like a live folder because it needs to be refreshed just before it is shown (if not, it would defeat the purpose). Live folders are refreshed only when QAP is loaded or when the menu is saved and reloaded. This being said, I have plans for working on refreshing recent folders in the background and embed them in the main menu. For later...

Thanks for your comment about new buttons.

        Jean

Those colored icons look great, Jean! Great polishing of the GUI! I'm sure this will for many people significantly enhance the user experience!

    0
    • Glad you like them 🙂

In a future release, I will also replace the default icons in menu with icons from the same source. This will make QAP independent from MS Windows changes in shell32.dll or imageres.dll files currently used for these default menu icons.

The challenge will be to replace icons in current users settings without loosing existing users custom icons.

I can imagine this to be a lot of work as you probably need to a lot of manual mapping of the icons. Thank you for your efforts on this, Jean!

    Hi Jean,

I'm using v7.5.9.2 beta and LOVE IT!

At the top level on my configuration I created a subfolder name "Live." In the "Live" subfolder I created four "live folders." Everything worked as expected until I tried to assign a shortcut to the "Live" subfolder. After doing that none of the live folders appear in the subfolder "Live." I then unassigned the shortcut, but the contents of the "Live" subfolder were not restored. I closed QAP and then opened the INI file. Here's what I found:

    Favorite97=Menu| &l Live|>  &l Live|C:\windows\System32\shell32.dll,298||||||||||0|1|0|30|
    Favorite98=Folder| &c-a|c:\a|C:\windows\System32\shell32.dll,4|||0,0,,,,,200|||||||0|3|0|30|
    Favorite99=Folder| &d|d:\|C:\windows\System32\shell32.dll,4|||0,0,,,,,200|||||||0|3|0|30|
    Favorite100=Folder| &h|h:\|C:\windows\system32\imageres.dll,-112|||0,0,,,,,200|||||||0|1|0|30|
    Favorite101=Folder| &ABC on fred|\\fred\fred.grp\ABC|C:\windows\System32\shell32.dll,4|||0,0,,,,,200|||||||0|1|0|30|

The four "live" folders are present (items 98 to 101), but as I stated above they do not appear in the "Live" subfolder.

This brings me to another question/suggestion. I see that QAP generates a back-up INI each day. I suggest that you keep the daily backup and add a back-up that would include the setting prior to most recent change. That way, in a situation like above I'd be able to recover the earlier changes I made today. In my case I had made several changes, including the creation of the "Live" and the four live folders, exited Settings, then returned to Settings to assign a shortcut to "Live". Fearing that my current INI is corrupted and could lead to other problems in the future, the prudent move at this point seems to be to go back to yesterday's INI (but of course I loose many QAP changes). (To keep this issue in the proper context, this and other minor QAP issues are a small price to pay considering all of the time (and ergonomic strain) that your amazing tool saves me everyday.)

    • Thanks for reporting this I'll work on it.

FYI, the favorites list in the ini file is backuped in a section called [Favorites-backup] before saving changes. This gives you access to favorites settings just before the last save. The backup file, on the other hand, is backuped only once a day.

Thanks for pointing out the [Favorites-backup] section. With that said I have more information to share. When I noticed the original issue, I quit QAP and saved the INI file. Here are the relevant excerpts from the INI:

        [Favorites-backup]
        Favorite96=Z
        Favorite97=Menu| &l Live|>  &l Live|C:\windows\System32\shell32.dll,298||||||||||0|1|0|30|

Sorry for the incomplete information in my first message. I just searched for "Live," found the section and assumed that it was the "active" section. But as I now see I sent you the contents in the [Favorites-backup] section.

Here's some additional information that might help you troubleshoot...

After your reply to my message I copied the saved INI, replaced [Favorites] with the contents of [Favorites-backup] but unfortunately the Live subfolder gets mangled again (i.e., it gets converted to what you see in the [Favorites] I supplied in this message). And during this attempt to recover, the Hotkey section did not include the Hotkey for the "Live" subfolder. So now I'm concluding that the original issue may not have had anything to do with adding the Hotkey for the "Live" subfolder. Maybe that's just when I noticed the issue.

        0
    • Hi Jim,

I tried to reproduce the issue but I was successful in doing what you did. Here is the ini file lines for these favorites:

      Favorite1=Menu|Live|> Live|C:\WINDOWS\System32\shell32.dll,300||||||||||0||||||
      Favorite2=Folder |Traktor Music|M:\Traktor Music|C:\WINDOWS\System32\shell32.dll,4|||0,0,,,,,200|||||||0|1|0|30|0|bak bk|
      Favorite3=Folder|iTunesMusic-Bureau|M:\iTunesMusic-Bureau|C:\Windows\system32\SHELL32.dll,129|||0,0,,,,,200|||||||0|1|0||0|bak bk|
      Favorite4=Z

As far as I can see, your ini lines have the property to display as live folders: the "3" in the third field from the end on lines 98-99 indicate live folders going 3 levels down. Could you retry with the latest version v7.5.9.6? Some bugs has been fixed and options has been added like documents filters.

Also, I wonder how much time it takes to refresh live folders going 3 levels down? Of course it depends on the number of entries in your folders. But, in your experience, is it "workable"?

      1+
      • Jim S

I downloaded and installed v7.5.9.6 (portable) and repeated the steps I described above (in my second message). Unfortunately, the "Live" subfolder gets mangled in the same manner.

Regarding your question about 3 levels - it's workable, but it does take about 5 seconds to save the settings as the refresh occurs.

  • Following a bug report, this beta test is currently suspended.

I recommend users of BETA version v7.5.9.x to use it only with test data.

Maybe it is an easy to fix bug but I'll take a fresh look at it tomorrow and post an update on this ASAP.

    • A quick update: I'm testing a new beta version with a limited number of users. If this goes well, I'll release a new beta version soon.

  • This release fixes the submenu bug reported by Jim earlier this week. The bug was not related to live folder as he initially suspected. Any subsequent changes in a new submenu could have produce the same result. This is fixed. Thanks, Jim!

Also, new in this release: QAP will not show its menu or launch favorites from hotkeys if changes are not saved in the Settings window. This will solve some situations hard to manage (for example if you tried to call favorite that you just deleted it in Settings). Also, minor improvements or fixes in the Hotkeys list window and in the shared menus management. QAP now displays an error message when attempting to update an external settings file on a read-only location.

    Version BETA: 7.5.9.8 (2016-11-06)
    Settings window:
    - stop launching favorites with hotkeys if changes in Settings window are unsaved
    - confirm before deleting a group in Settings
    Hotkeys:
    - changes done in Hotkeys list are now properly cancelled if user cancel changes in Settings window
    - display item order column in Hotkeys list and sort initialy on this column following the QAP menu order
    - stop displaying group members in Hotkeys list
    Shared menus:
    - compare last modified date after saving shared settings file and display an error message if date is identical (probably because the target file is read-only)
    - display an error message if a new shared settings file cannot be created (probably because target folder is read-only)
    - append .ini extension if destination export file has no extension when exporting settings
    - append .ini extension when browsing/creating a shared settings file
    - stop prompting to create file when selecting shared menu file
    Version BETA: 7.5.9.7 (2016-11-02)
    - fix bug when after creating a menu, saving Settings and stay in Settings, the new menu was not properly reloaded
    - stop showing the main menu if changes in Settings window are unsaved

  • I raised the beta version number to 7.9.n.n because I decided to publish the next master release as version 8. There are enough changes from v7.5.4.3 to the next master release to justify this major version number change.

In this release: new icons from my own icons file JLicons.dll. The setup program will add this file to the QAP program files folder. For portable users, it has been added to the portable zip file. In both case, it must reside in the same folder as QAP exe file.

Using JLicons will put an end to QAP's dependencies on Windows files shell32.dll and imageres.dll. Because icons position in these files was changing from one Windows version to the other (even for small service pack releases), I always had to worry about the impact of Windows version on these icons. Also, when users migrated from Windows 7 or 8 to Windows 10, many QAP favorite icons had to be fixed. This is over now!

And these new icons are very nice, isn't it? They come from https://icons8.com.

Also in this release, fixes to some of the issues raised recently by users.

    Version BETA: 7.9.1.1 (2016-11-13)
    - use icons from new JLicons.dll file installed with QAP or included in the portable ZIP file (stop depedencies on Windows files shell32.dll and imageres.dll)
    - for icons from JLicon.dll, save favorite icons reference in ini file using index name (like "iconAbout") instead of file name and index number
    - when settings changes are unsaved and menu is called or favorite is launched via hokey, ask user if save settings, go to settings or cancel requested action
    - add cmd extension to supported application when adding favorite by drag and drop or using context menu
    - record window position when adding a folder from context menu
    0
    • I have to mention that icons for your existing favorites will not be changed. You will see new icons appear as you add new favorite folders, special folders, QAP features, etc. I will soon include a tool that will allow users who want it to update their existing icons to the new QAP's JLicons.

I'm loving Live Folders feature. It's very useful. Here's a suggestion to further improve it.
    - Open the root folder with a mouse double click.

If this is possible, this method could also be used to open a specific folder with a mouse double click on a "Submenu".

  • Darren Lambourne

Live folders are excellent. With my use case I unfortunately have the problem where QAP stops working (I guess because too many folders are parsed). So I look forward to any improvements/fixes you can make in that area.

For me, a useful feature would be the ability to show a tree of folders, just like Live folders, but show only those folders that contain a specified file type.

A little background; I am trying to find a way to organise/navigate a large library of virtual instruments to enable a more fluid workflow when I'm composing. The instrument library contains many thousands of files of different kinds. Of course Live Folders does not discriminate and catalogs all the folders regardless of their content which, of course, adds to the clutter and sheer size of the tree.

I am only interested in maybe 2 of those file types, this accounts for maybe 5% of the overall number of files that are contained in the library. If I were able to limit QAP to listing folders containing only those file types there would certainly be less folders in the tree which would make the strain on QAP lower and also improve the clarity of my search.

    Cheers
    Darren

Live folders already have the option to include / exclude extensions !
Why don't you use it ?

    • Happy to receive "real life" feedback about Live folders. And happy to help you in your mucical work 🙂

There are limitation to the number of items that can be added to a Windows menu. You have to know that QAP is not building its own menus. It sends standard commands to Windows (using the scripting language AHK) and Windows is in charge of of menus rendering and of managing user input. I'm not sure what part of the limitation we face with large Live folders comes from QAP or from Windows itself. But I had the same issue loading large Live folders.

I can add a filter to retain only folders that have certain type files. But this is a bit tricky in the situation where a folder does not have these files but have subfolders. Then, QAP would have to scan these subfolders and exclude a given folder only if none of its subfolders have the files. Let me look at it.

      0
      • Darren Lambourne

Ah I see. I was thinking that maybe an offline parse and store would help, rather than constant update. So the tree would be built/populated only when an update button was pressed within QAP.

        • In a future version, this could be done by a background task. I tried it in the past with little success (ie: bugs!) and abandoned it. I should rework on this one of these days.

I worked on your suggestion. Your idea will not be implemented in the next release (v7.9.1.2). But, doing some test for it, I took the opportunity to improved the way live folders are created. Now live folders with documents will only be created if a folder contains at least one documents of the desired extensions or if it contains at least one subfolder. It will not filter out folders without the desired documents yet.

  • In this release, improvements to Live folders, one new QAP feature to refresh the QAP menu on demand (useful when experimenting with Live folders!) that you must add yourselve using the "Add Favorite", "QAP Feature" type, etc. Also, two recent "easy to implement" requests.

    Version BETA: 7.9.1.2 (2016-11-16)
    - add QAP Feature "Refresh QAP menu" (useful when using Live folders - must be added to menu by the user)
    - in Live folders, stop showing a virtual sub-menu if folder does not contain sub folders or documents of desired extensions
    - add ini setting AlternativeTrayIcon in Global section to set a tray icon replacement (file must be .ico)
    - add links allowing to select Enter and Escape as hotkey in the Change hotkey dialog box
    - use new QAP icon for QAP exe files and setup file, add new icon file to portable zip file

    - fix bug with Live folder filtering

  • Still working on Live folders. I think we now have something good (at least from my own tests). To avoid large Live folders to hang QAP and Windows, I put a limit to the number of items that can be added to Live folders menus. This limit is set by default to 500 (for all Live folders altogether). This limit can be augmented in the Settings file but at user's own risks. Please, tell me what you think of this limit.

    Version BETA: 7.9.1.4 (2016-11-18)
    - fix bug with Live folder filtering
    - stop building live folders if max number exceeded (default 500 menu items)
    - add NbLiveFolderItems setting under [Global] section of QuickAccessPopup ini file
    - display an alert message if Live folders limit is exceeded
    - reset live folder options when Live folder checkbox is turned off

  • We are getting close to v8 public release. This beta release adds the last piece that I wanted to include in the new version: a new dialog box to manage icons where you will be able to replace globally old v7 icons with the new icons. You can display this dialog box from the "Manage Icons" button in the lower right corner of the "Settings" window or by adding the new QAP feature named "Manage Icons" to your menu.

This release also comes with a new version of icons.
    - In setup mode, this JLicons.dll file is now saved in a new shared folder under the "common app folder" (for example: C:\ProgramData\JeanLalonde\JLicons.dll) ; this new shared icons file will eventually be used by other apps I have in mind for the future.
    - In portable mode, make sure it replaces the file named JLicons.dll in your working directory.

    Version BETA: 7.9.2 (2016-11-24)
    - add Manage Icons dialog box giving an overview of current icons of favorites with buttons to pick a new icon of set the default icon for each favorite
    - add Manage Icons button in Settings window and rearrange buttons layout in Settings
    - add Manage Icons QAP feature allowing to add the feature to QAP menu
    - new JLicons.dll version 1.1, moved to shared app folder in setup mode

There is something wrong with the display of the new "Manage Icons".
It fills the full height of my display and I can't reach the topmost 2 entries
      because there are no scrollbars.

      0
      • The number of rows is calculated after detecting the height of your screen. There may be an error in the way this info is collected or processed by QAP. until I debug it (with your help?), you can add this value under the [Global] section of the ini file:

        IconsManageRows=10
(10 or any number that fits in your screen).

FYI, I would have like to make a window with a scroll bar but this is not possible with AHK to display a scrollable list including images the way we need it in this window.

  • Portable version users, may I ask for your opinion on this suggestion?
    http://www.quickaccesspopup.com/quick-access-popup-wishlist/#comment-12643

I've always distributed Folders Popup and Quick Access Popup executable files named with version number and 32/64 bit info (ie QuickAccessPopup-7_9_2_1-BETA-32-bit.exe). I'm not opposed to change this and distribute the ZIP content with fixed names as suggested by this user. Would there be any reason for not doing this? I'm just curious because no user complained about that in the last three years.

  • Only minor changes in the app itself. But a major rework of my compiling and distribution scripts. The only visible changes for you is the new QAP v8 icon for beta version. It has a green background (not intended to be nice but to make sure we remember that we run a beta version). Please, report any issue you would have upgrading to this new version with the new Setup or Portable ZIP files. And, if you have a chance, it would not hurt to test a fresh installation of the app on a new machine.

Official release of v8 should be done real shortly now...

    Version BETA: 7.9.2.4 (2017-01-02)
    - re-enable menu icons on Windows Server versions
    - translate Left and Right words for Ctrl-Ctrl option in Options 2nd tab
    - rework compile and setup scripts, change beta app icon for v8

    • There is one change in the portable distribution file that I forgot to mention. The executable files in the ZIP file are now named with fix names (quickaccesspopup-32-bit.exe and quickaccesspopup-64-bit.exe). As suggested earlier, this will make it easier for portable version users to upgrade to the new version simply by overwriting the executable file of the previous version.

To help see what version is in the ZIP file, a text file has been added with the version number in its name, for example "QAP-v7-9-2-4.txt".

  • I released Quick Access Popup v8 today (see Download links on home page). This is a soft launch. I will "push" the new version number for the "Check for update" command later, probably Tomorrow, if everything continue to run smoothly.

I want to that you again for your help testing this new version. I will soon archive the comments on this page to the archive page.

And to all of you, I wish you an Happy New Year!

  • If users of QAP regular release receive a message about a new beta version v7.9.9, there is no 7.9.9 version. There is a small issue with the "check for update" function. Please download the latest version on home page.

If you get this message repeatedly, please let me know here.

  • This new beta release is to validate changes made to QAP shortcuts managements before rolling these changes to all users with v8.1.

This release will convert the entries in your [Hotkeys] section in QuickAccessPopup.ini to a new format required to support various shortcuts for the same location. You should not need to do this but if whenever you want to revert to QAP v8.04 (or previous release), you will have to revert this conversion. You can easily do it manualy (let me know and I'll explain) or keep a backup of your QuickAccessPopup.ini file before upgrading to this beta release.

    Version BETA: 8.0.9.1 (2017-02-05)

    QAP Feature
    - add the Run as administrator command to the Alternative menu (Shift + MMB or Shift + Windows + W)

    Shortcuts
    - display shortcuts in a new column in the Settings
    - in favorites shortcuts, support left only or right only keyboard modifiers for Shift, Alt, Ctrl and Win keys
    - support different shortcuts for favorites with the same location with different options, if they have different names (hotkeys are now linked to "name + location")

  • This should be the last beta release before v8.1. Two new quick features related to mouse hotkeys exclusion in dialog boxes, disabling group members and an attempt to resolve an issue in Firefox dialog box.

For those upgrading from v8.0.4 or earlier: This release will convert the entries in your [Hotkeys] section in QuickAccessPopup.ini to a new format required to support various shortcuts for the same location. You should not need to do this but if whenever you want to revert to QAP v8.04 (or previous release), you will have to revert this conversion. You can easily do it manually (let me know and I'll explain) or keep a backup of your QuickAccessPopup.ini file before upgrading to this beta release.

    Version BETA: 8.0.9.2 (2017-02-14)
    - exclude QAP mouse hotkey in dialog boxes based on the title or the class name of the dialog boxes parent window; for title or class prefixed with "*" in exclusion list, QAP will also exclude app's dialog box
    - group members can now be disabled (same as favorites being hidden in menu), change disable checkbox label for group members
    - add delay in navigate dialog box to solve (partly?) an intermittent issue in Firefox (and other apps?) dialog box; store delay in ini file variable WaitDelayInDialogBox (default 100 ms)
    - add separator before RunAs in Alternative menu
